Any nursing majors out there

Just wondering if there are any nursing majors out there from Pitt? Could you tell me how you like the program? I have a D interested in Pitt and would like some first hand info. Thanks!

Unfortunately, I'm not a nursing major. I hope that I will be one in the future though. How old is your D? I'm a junior. I requested information from the Pitt SON through Peterson's website. I'll send you a PM if I get any good information. Hopefully I'll be visiting soon!

trente-quatre,
My D is 16, almost 17 and she is a senior. We are visiting Pitt tomorrow because like you, we thought the nursing program sounded great. We also requested some info from the college of nursing, but haven't heard back from them yet. I'm a nurse, but I graduated from a local university nearly 20 years ago. My D just got accepted at the local university, but isn't sure if she wants to go after doing some post secondary work there. Anyway, I will try and post about the trip on the "college visits" site.

I've been accepted into the Nursing program, and I know many people who have attended Pitt for Nursing and I've heard very positive things about the curriculum.

I've decided to turn down my offer of admission to the University of Pittsburgh Nursing program. Mostly because I have been offered $32,000 in merit aid from a private college. I will still go on to major in Nursing and I felt that the students there were more focused than Pitt students. I met a few current Nursing freshman at U of Pitt and there weren't too friendly. They seemed to be very focused upon drinking, boys, and money. I don't mean to sound like I'm stereotyping but it left a bad taste in my mouth so to speak. Good luck to all of you! :)

I am sorry that your visit to Pitt was negative. However, I must disagree with you! The nursing program at Pitt is highly rated and from experience I can tell you that nursing students study hard at Pitt. The courses are demanding and challenging. Good luck!

I'm sure it is very demanding as most nursing curriculums are, it just isn't the right choice for me. :) I know you said your daughter is a freshman in the Nursing program, would you mind telling me her first name? (I might've met her). :)

I have no direct knowledge of the nursing program, but I do know it is #10 USNW and was featured recently in either Newsweek or USNW magazine for the top ten hospitals for medical training. UPMC Shadyside was the staff interviewed for the article, but the entire nursing program was well highlighted.

My D is in engineering, but she lives in the honors dorm. There is a fair amount of partying, but these kids spend a huge amount of time studying, are extremely focused, and not the least bit obsessed with "boys and money". Maura, hopefully you met the exceptions and not the rule.

BTW, my D had an emergency appendectomy the Tuesday before Parents Weekend and was taken to UPMC Presbyterian by two of her friends and the Pitt police (she couldn't walk). Two of the nursing staff that checked on her post-op were a junior male nursing student being shadowed by a freshman girl nursing student (who lived on her floor!). She said it was a little disconcerting to be "treated" by someone she knew who was only 2 years older than her, but they did a good job. That gives you an idea of how soon the kids get "hands on" experience.

The Newsweek(?) article was about medical training/care. The part on UPMC focused on their nursing program.

My D has been accepted into the nursing program with an interview for guaranteed grad school. When we went for a visit everyone was very nice and helpful. I truly hope that Maura's visit was an exception. I know my daughter is not into the drinking partying scene. She wants to go there for a good education.

Mercymom,
Yes, it can be weird being treated by someone you know. Being a nurse at a hospital I have experienced that. The nurse I knew asked if it was ok to have her as my nurse. I felt weird having her as my nurse, but also would feel weird if I said no to her. She ended up being the best nurse I had during my stay.

I wasn't saying that Pitt doesn't have a great program because they do! However, I visited with a friend who is a current Nursing student so I was able to get more of an 'inside look' over a weekend stay. And like I said the other school offered me a scholarship which I just can't pass up. Both of the schools are the same price so if I had to pay full price my decision might be a bit different. However, I prefer a calmer enviroment, don't ask me why, it's just what I like. :) Congratulations to all of you!
