Any oos receive more then the “classic scholar award”?

My son was fortunate enough to receive the classic scholar award from UGA, with a total amount of $37,000. I was curious if anyone else has received more then this amount? We were told that they do give out more money come March or April. Thanks!

Yes, my D’s good friend got the presidential waiver of full oos tuition. She has a 4.0 uw gpa and a 33 ACT

@gatordawg
I am going to assume that you have ties to UGA and UF with your name. With that in mind - I have a question.

My ds has it narrowed to a few schools and UF and UGA are top of heap. He is business major. He received the classic scholar award at UGA and nothing from UF. To my mind, UF and UGA are very close … I am having a hard time thinking that UF can win the tug of war with the cost savings of attending UGA.

Is there any compelling reason to choose UF over UGA in spite of the scholarship?

I would be open to anyone’s educated reply. Thanks.

@jetsdad my son is in a similar boat as yours, his top 2 pics are Georgia and Florida. Where we probably differ is that my son has Florida prepaid, since we used to live in the state. Essentially, we have already paid for Florida’s tuition and a year of dorm. If he chooses to go to another school, we get the money back that we put in, but without the 18 years of interest. Georgia would cost us a lot more money, but at this point my son is leaning in that direction. The schools are very similar, Florida is ranked higher, I believe 9 vs 16. Florida is also a more diverse population, Georgia is in Athens which in my opinion, is more of a town then Gainesville. In regards to sports and Greek life the schools are pretty much the same. My son seems to feel like Florida may be a little more “serious” environment. Georgia felt a little more laid back to him with a better balance of work and play. It doesn’t hurt that there are 90 bars in Athens

@jetsdad however, I have heard that those Gators also have a good time! Logistically speaking, both schools are a little challenging to get to. Gainesville has a small airport, but probably difficult to find direct flights. I believe most fly into Jacksonville and drive an hour and a half to the school. I don’t know if Athens has an airport, but most likely you would need to fly into Atlanta and drive an hour and half plus in crazy traffic. Climate is somewhat different as well. The summers and early fall are probably pretty similar, but definitely more of a change of seasons in Georgia. Both schools are great, and our boys are lucky to have them as options!

Yes. I would agree both are good options.

Having been to both campuses, I agree that Athens was the nicer town.

The other visual observation I made was that the dining facilities and non D1 athletic facilities at UGA were far better.

D just got offered the UGA Presidential Leadership Scholarship today to replace the Classic. Go Dawgs!

Should’ve mentioned we are FL residents and she’s been accepted to UF.

@jetsdad UGA ‘91 here. We currently live in Florida. D has been accepted to UGA, UF, Bama, and Texas A&M. We were a military family and D entered 9th grade in her 7th school. She’s been to Athens many times over the years and a bunch recently as she looks at schools. During HS she has also been to UF several times. She gets the rankings and all, but there was something about UF she just did not like. I made her apply to UF for the value of the education in state and to secure her FL Bright Futures. To me, Athens is a much better town than Gainesville to live. They are similar in some ways as mentioned above. UF is a phenomenal school as is UGA. I think it’s a matter of feel and preference and you should visit not. It’s been interesting watching her decide. She’s got nice Scholarship offers from all of them but was accepted as a University Fellow at Bama. I think that is where she will go, but UGA revised her scholarship yesterday and is giving her pause. Best wishes and I hope yours finds the place for them. -HD

@HillDawg Did they revise her scholarship on their own or did you go back to them with a request?

@OneEyedWonder - they sent her an email that her scholarship had been updated and she could log onto the application portal to check. It came out of the blue. She applied to FF and Ramsey but was not selected as a finalist. Their new offer brought my alma mater back from the brink. As OOS, we needed the waiver. Hope things turn out the way you want. —HD

What were her stats? Was her unweighted gpa high? It seems from the threads that uga places more value on gpa than act scores

Her unweighted GPA is 4.0. Her ACT was 35 composite, 34 Math, 35 English. 10 APs. Good ECs. They do place a lot of weight on gpa and rigor as told to us personally by admissions. We were very happy to get the OOS waiver. Like I mentioned, it brought UGA back into the mix. Best wishes for your situation. —HD

Thank you Congratulations to your daughter

@Tnmom987. Thank you very much. I’m glad this whole process is over. The “business” of college admissions injects a huge amount of pressure on our kids. A lot of it is unnecessary in my opinion and borders on manipulation. Some of the hoops our kids are jumping through are ridiculous. Again, best wishes to you and everyone on here that is helping their kids finalize their decisions. —HD
