Any other class of 2017 hopefuls?

wow that was really long…sorry :D

beautifulchick – I’d go with the slippers but weave in how you wear them helping the kids, playing violin/viola/piano, etc. if you do that. WM likes quirky. WM is quirky. The fit is important. Good luck with your dreams!

I would go with the slippers one too. When everything ties together, it’s best…my essay (last year) was about how I love sparkles, and it tied into a lot of other aspects of myself. :)

@beautifulchick95, just be sure that you address different topics in your personal essay and optional submission. What can be frustrating for us is when one essay is just a variation of the other. Our hope is to continue learning new things about you.

Thank you BurghMom3 and SFcollege21 for the advice. I think I know how to formulate my essay now. I am going to take your advice and write about slippers. I was thinking about tying that into my personality and say that my love for wearing slippers relates to how I am laid back and pretty chill person, which allows me to be able to work with children and be able ignore mean things people have said to me. Also I could briefly mention how I love to play music, however I am not so good at it but I don’t care because playing music is something I enjoy. Thank you guys!!!

@W&M Admission thank you so much for the advice. I was just wondering about my additional activities on the common application. I recently just got a job as a babysitter every friday night for the rest of the year. However, I have already submitted my common app. So, should I call admissions staff so could be added to my file or should I just not worry about it?

I got deferred :(. But William and Mary is still my dream college so I’m going to try to transfer. Could anyone point me to resources to help me make myself a competitive transfer applicant please?

WMHopeful - I’m so sorry you got deferred. My daughter got deferred three years ago and ultimately rejected, and my son was just deferred, and of course we know that the odds aren’t in his favor for ultimately being accepted, so I can sympathize with how you feel. You would be making a mistake, however, to start college with one foot already out the door. If you were a good enough candidate to apply ED that means you’re smart, organized, and analytical. Use those gifts to research colleges and find one you can be happy at. Sure, thinking of transferring can be an escape hatch, but if you’re not careful, it can also be a crutch and might ruin what otherwise could have been a terrific college experience. Hang in there, and stay in the game. You’ll really be fine.

@beautifulchick, we wouldn’t worry about it. That one activity will not make or break an admission decision.

@WMhopeful13 and @justwonderful we’re sorry the news couldn’t be better and we do appreciate how much you (and your son) want to attend W&M. But @justwonderful is right, if it doesn’t work out with W&M, figure out what options you do have and give whichever institution you pick a chance. Transferring is certainly an option but it’s not the one you should start with. There are so many wonderful colleges out there with some really great experiences to offer. You’ll short change yourself if you don’t give them a fighting chance.

Sometimes it is a good idea to focus your activities … it gives a reader a better idea of who you are and where your passion lies. There seems to be a lot of talk about emphasizing “quirkiness”. Sometimes it instead shows a person who is trying to do too much; maybe at the detriment to other aspects of their life (school). The slippers are a great topic - but think about the essay… is “weird” really a good descriptor for who you are; the type of student you will be?

Well my friend tell me that I do weird things all the time. Wearing slippers is only one of the quirks I have. My college counselor thought it was a good idea to write about it because I can relate it to my personality.

@W&MAdimission thank you for the speedy response.

@beautifulchick95 I agree, go with the slippers. Write a quirky essay. Even if it lacks gravitas, it’ll definitely showcase your personality, creative writing ability, and worldview. I wrote an essay comparing my old cellphone to a pet haha, but hey, they liked it :)

@PhDbeenthere Thank You for your advice. I do want to write an essay that is more uplifting than my common app essay so I wanted to make it funny and show another side of me. I do not necessarily want to be weird on purpose but I want to show W&M that I am creative and have a funny personality.
