Any other class of 2017 hopefuls?

@W&M Admission, to second SherryPeng, yes, thanks so much! I’m sure you all get a ton of the same questions everyday so thanks for taking the time to answer them!

Yes yes  thank you! we really appreciate it!

So everyone, to get our mind off of admissions decisions momentarily, Do you guys have a favorite class this year? what do you like to do out of school? Favorite T.V show? anything goes! haha

As for me, I’m LOVING psychology this year, and it’s helped me decide I want to go into neuroscience. All my other classes are good. Except calculus BC. I think I die a little every time I go to that class :stuck_out_tongue: sooo hard!
out of school, I work at a tutoring center (Kumon) 12 hours a week, am in a few clubs, play tennis, and focus most of my time on violin and orchestra! I love it
Oh and favorite TV show is probably Grey’s Anatomy (don’t judge :P) and fringe!

@soccersara, yes deferred students are absolutely qualified to be admitted but so are most students who apply to W&M. Our process isn’t about determining who’s qualified it’s about trying to build a diverse, talented, interesting, dynamic class. While deferred students are absolutely competitive for admission, they didn’t stand out as much as those who were admitted ED and the competition only becomes steeper in Regular Decision because so many more students apply.

Sara, good idea! It’s always good to get the mind off of this. Less stress everywhere is a good thing.

My favorite class this year might actually be Physics…and I am shocked. I hated Chemistry with a burning passion and Calculus and I do not get along. But surprisingly, I am enjoying Physics. I also love my British Literature course.
Outside of school, I volunteer at a local American library (I’m abroad at the moment  ) and run English as a Second Language workshops. I’m also a part of some clubs in school and that’s so cool that you’re in an orchestra! I know some piano and guitar but not that well. Favorite tv show… I’m a sitcom person. I’m really enjoying New Girl this year and Happy Endings. xD

GUYS DECISIONS ARE SENT!!!

I got in  WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE MY HAPPINESS RIGHT NOW literally crying!!!

Good news for anyone else?!?!?! please say yes !!!

Spiral: ah good for you  physics is giving me some trouble this year too! it’s tough.
And wow that’s awesome!! Abroad where? and guitar and piano are awesome  I played piano for years. i so wish I could play guitar! I tried to teach myself for a while but it didn’t work out too well :P

AHH I love new girl :D

My son Brian just discovered he got in!!! Big whoops of joy in our household. He’s on the phone letting his grandmother and older brother now the great news! He’s delighted, his mother and I are hugely relieved!!!

Congratulations to everyone who got admitted last night! Hope you’re all excited and celebrating today!

I still have awhile before I know my spring transfer decision, but fingers crossed that I get to go to Williamsburg too :)

Hi all congrats on your acceptances. I just had a couple of questions to ask. I know that W&M is my top choice for school. I have wanted to go there since I was a little girl. Unfortunately this year my parents would not allow me to apply ED because they wanted to compare FA packages which sucks. But anyway I know that W&M does a holistic review but I cannot resist to ask questions about the admission process. I have I would say a little above average grades in high school around a B+/A- UW average. But my SAT scores were horrendous and my ACT scores were even worst. I know that in the application process, applicants are viewed as more than a number so I wanted to know if my EC activities could balance out my bad SAT scores. During my summers I volunteer at a camp as an 1:1 aid to children who have autism or other disabilities. During the school year I help out at an elementary school everyday during the week and at this particular school many of the children do not speak english, so I speak Spanish to them to help them keep up in class and also I read stories to the children. I am also a member of Big Brother/ Big sister club at my school and I have a little sister that I hang out with every week and help her with her homework, play with her, ETC. I have a job as a baby sitter I have a bunch of other EC activities and I have 3 leadership position (Diversity and GSA head facilitator, viola section leader). I have over 900 CS hours, which is all from working with children. Point is I love children and I know I want to work with children when I get older. I do not know in what form but I know that this is my passion. So if I articulate this someway in my essays or in my application would this help me? Thank you to whoever reads this and congrats again WM class of 2017!!!

If I remember correctly, W&M has an open ended essay topic, so you’re free to write about anything you want. Your extracurriculars look fantastic and I think that you’ll definitely be a really competitive candidate! Make sure you write a compelling essay that synthesizes all of your experiences and explains why you’ll be a great fit. Best of luck, and don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any other questions!

Yes, I agree! Definitely utilize the open ended supplement  I think my essay that I did for it really helped my application! Don’t fret the SAT/ACT scores too much, they’re an element, but certainly not the only one. And your EC’s are amazing! I’d definitely write about your passion for children, I’m already seeing it shine through in your post. Admissions will see it too!

And thanks so much  I hope you will be joining the Tribe!

Penguin: thanks so much  and GOOD LUCK! I’m hoping for you to join the tribe very very soon!

Thank You all for replying and your support. I did write about my passion a little bit in my common app essay. I touched upon my love for children in my common app essay. I talked about how I had a rough childhood and I am using that experience to drive to want to help children so they will never have to go through what I went through. But I did not use specific examples. So I was wondering if I should articulate my love for children more in my optional essay or should I write a really quirky essay or a serious one. So I have three options i guess. My mom thinks I should go with the essay that shows my difficulties because she wants me to show colleges that I am touch and can overcome anything but IDK. I don’t want to come across with the impression that I had an awful life. But anyway here are my ideas for the optional supplement:
1) talk more about my love for children and use specify examples from my time working with them
2) I was bullied in my previous high school for being overweight and looking different from the other girls because I was more developed then them. And also include how I slowly learned to accept me as who I am and I should not let people stop me from being me.
3) * My friend Kara things this option is really original, funny, and cute because I actually do this. I like it but I don’t want to come across as being abnormal. I think this option is kind of weird but that is kindy why I like it
I have an obsession with slippers. I wear them about everywhere no matter the weather conditions. Snow, hail, rain, sleet, You name it because I have done it. I actually was just wearing a pair when I was walking to the store in the snow. So I was going to write about my weirdness and relate it to how I see life because I am a really laid back person, I am enjoyable to be around and according my friends when I smile I put them at ease because they know that I am care about them
Thank you for reading this. I feel like I am overthinking it but I want my essay to be perfect. Also I play an instrument but I do not know if I should submit an art supplement because I am very new to the instrument I play currently (the viola), I am good at it because I played the violin and the piano for like my entire life and I would like to continue an instrument in college but I feel like I would not be able to put together a great supplement because I cannot really play complex pieces on the viola and it has been years since I picked up a violin or played the piano. So is it worth it?
