Any Questions for a Current UCLA Student(s)?

Hellloooo again!

I’m considering taking LS 4 during summer session. What do you think about this? Have you taken this class as a psychobio major? Do you think this is do-able coming from a community college and jumping into a condensed, challenging life science class provided that I’m not used to the competitive environment?

Thanks so much!!

I’ve been admitted as microbiology, immunology major, but am thinking about switching to psychobiology or neuroscience-do you think it would be easy to do?

@hellanorcal

I was considering the same thing lol! And I’m the same major as you.

I just got back from the Financial Aid office, I was so happy that it was empty, LOL.

Regarding summer housing (just for anyone that was wondering!):

She told me that technically university apartments are not considered on-campus, as stated by their name “off-campus”, but they will give a little bit more aid because they realize that they are apart of the university. I told her my situation, that I am taking courses and have a job and internship but I don’t like meal plans and I would never use them, which is why I opted for the studio, and she said she understood but unfortunately they wouldn’t be able to award me as much. Thankfully, I still haven’t applied for summer housing, so maybe my best friend and I will stay in De Neve for this summer. The only crummy part of it all, is that during summer only one dining hall is open and its usually Hedrick… but I’m all for having my private bathroom again!

If I’m bored and not being productive (or we’re watching a movie today, I’ll come on here and answer more questions or else I’ll answer them later on today when I get back to my dorm after work!

Hi Tiffany it’s me…again lol

I wanted to ask you if it’s possible to change majors at UCLA? Since I wasn’t admitted as a psych major I want to do something else. I liked the lower division philosophy classes because they were similar to psychology, but the upper division classes seem boring since they focus on the philosophers, Greece, and all that stuff. I’m not into that stuff and I don’t want to feel miserable the next two years. I’'m interested in the film and theather school or doing something like graphic/web design.

oh yeah another question. At UCLA do we get the syllabus or is it possible to know the textbooks before classes start. Also do you know if we are allowed to get the previous edition of a textbook (cheaper).

O-M-G. It signed me out and didn’t let me post my effing reply. I am soooo mad, it took such a long time to type out! I will be back to reply…-.-;;;

PS-My BAR account shows my summer bill, holy eff, lol.

Rheel3 is that with your housing? I cant figure out how to submit my housing application without paying for the housing on the spot? I’m so confused and can’t even find a number to call housing :(

^
Nope, it’s not. You have to pay your housing separately (this happens during the year too. FA office doesn’t pay them, you have to pay them directly), which is why I haven’t applied for housing yet. At this point, depending on my award letter, I’ll have to get a damn meal plan. I will stick with De Neve though, I could NOT stand living in Rieber Hall where I KNOW they will put Session A students.    (that and the whole not having a private bathroom).

Oh, I only saw residential halls, university apartments, and residential suites on the application. I didn’t even see plazas. How do you usually pay for your housing then? If we don’t get financial aid until a week before school starts… I should probably be worrying about the regular school year more than summer then… :/

Wait, so we’re supposed to have 10,000.00+ dollars readily available when we do our application for the school year to pay for it in full???

^
Everything is different in summer. Basically in summer, they don’t get a lot (compared to in the school year) students so they want their money up-front, lol. In the school year, they will make the housing payments due after we get our financial aid money. The “plans” are listed on the housing website, there’s one for “Financial Aid Package” or something like that. This is the way it works, financial aid will pay your fees and everything for the quarter, and usually you will get a pretty significant sum of money back after everything is paid off on their end. For example, I get close to $7,000 deposited to my bank account after everything is paid off. Then, it’s my responsibility to pay my housing account. They don’t do that. Keep in mind not everyone gets the same amount. My roommate for example didn’t get Regents/nor a full-ride so she gets more along the lines of ~$3,000 and that pays off the housing payment for the quarter, so don’t be alarmed, lol. If you do want to pay up your housing up front, they’re happy with that too…lol.

PS-I’m thinking of paying off my summer housing by myself since I do have a bit saved up from the money I get returned each quarter, so I won’t have to worry about it…since you were wondering.

What classes do you recommend taking for summer as a psych major? and is it true the deadline for financial aid has passed on april 30th? how does that work for transfers who don’t even have to sir til june 1st

^
I don’t recommend you taking any Psychology courses during the summer, because you would end up taking 100A&B and those…I don’t think anyone should take them if you’re not adjusted yet. Definitely don’t want your GPA to suffer starting out! Also, they do that because they don’t expect transfers to go to summer sessions, and if they do, then they think something along the lines of TSP, where the FA is covered for the most part.

hey tiffany. i think im doing off campus housing meaning the apartments right? does that mean that i have to have my roommates ready when i apply for housing? also, are there any apartments you would recommend? if possible i would like a room to myself.

^
Nope, even though you chose off campus university apartments, they will choose your roommate for you, unless you have put in their UC ID on the housing application. I’ve heard horror stories, lol. Anyways, if you want a room to yourself, apply for a one person studio, that’s what I’m planning to do for the summer! Hope it helps!

hey tiff I have another question

I was checking out the student orientation website and it says that it’s only for students. so my folks can’t come? I live two hours away from LA and dont have a car of my own.

oh and I just spoke to a lady on the phone. she called me giving me all sorts of information. she was talking so fast that i couldn’t catch a few things. It had to do with orientation and getting ready and all that stuff

I’ll start replying to the other people here! (sorry for the delay, blame CC for kicking me out before I posted the long response!)

To KidKrasher: Orientation? You want to bring your parents to Orientation? That’s not going to happen, lol. I’ll wait until it approaches Orientation dates, but you don’t want them to come because they will be extremely bored. I’ll explain more later when people start asking, but trust me…don’t bring them, I don’t think you even can to be honest, and if you do, you have to pay for them and that’s…ugh, I mean, unless you’re ballin’ go ahead!

Regarding the major change…definitely research for yourself and ASAP. Like you said, it’s the next two years…and if you don’t enjoy it, your GPA might reflect that. Might I suggest, Anthropology? Anthropology at UCLA actually has a graduate division which is Psychological Anthropology if you didn’t know! Anyways, there are Psychological Anthropologists, and I’ve had the great opportunity of taking Anthropology 135B last Winter-Current Topics in Psychological Anthropology (or something like that) the intermingling of both subjects was amazing, but also my TA was super awesome so I learned a wholeeee bunch. Think about it! I also have graduate students in my department who were undergrads in Anthropology! And to be honest, my alternate when applying to UCLA was not Psychology but Anthropology, I love the cultural aspect of the field. And regarding your second question, by California law it is now required for professors to post the list of their books needed for a course, so yes of course the information is there! When you go to the registrar to register for your courses/check out the courses, there should be a link above the course information and such that says ‘Textbooks’ you click on that and it will take you to the UCLA store and tell you exactly what books you need. I’m not too sure on the edition thing, but I would say no. Professors know that we’re broke, so they try to be really lenient with stuff, and in my three quarters, I’ve never had a super expensive textbook that I couldn’t find at Amazon for much cheaper than the UCLA store (those prices are outrageous!) So I suggest you, a couple of weeks before courses begin to check those links out and buy your books off Amazon/half/etc and get those shipped ASAP!

Wow i didn’t realize how hard psych 100a was. I signed up for that session C . If i decide to drop is it really a $150 fee?

^
Think about it this way. In the normal school year, that course fills up in less than a week…or maybe two, tops. The registration has been up since February 1st for us, lol…yeah. Maybe think about another course you can take to get the adjustment going for the fall, because if you do drop it–they will charge you those $150 without a doubt! Are you in AAP?

To dezziner: Believe it or not, Berkeley was my dream school since I was super little. My family and I even lived in San Francisco for a while for my dad’s job when I was younger, but when I truly thought about it…the whole SF environment got boring after a while. It was so…predictable. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the shopping, (LOL) but I felt like it was the same thing over and over…again. I picked UCLA because I could not see myself over there for two years, even if I had a full-ride/Regents and a very good friend, I just couldn’t. Westwood/LA is just…I can’t even explain it! There’s ALWAYS something to do, at least I feel like there is!

Regarding your second question, I definitely think you should start emailing people from your department, because they would know more and b)that’s what UCLA pays them for, lol. So don’t be afraid to ask. I don’t want to lead you to think a certain way and then have it not be true! But as far as I’m concerned, there’s so many opportunities for internships, of course! You don’t know how many emails I get from the Career Center, lol. Sorry I couldn’t be of much help here, but I wish you luck!

To nooriebee: I honestly don’t recommend any life sciences period, lol jk. I know students who are now juniors who have been here since freshmen year and have failed Life Science 1! 1! I wouldn’t recommend it, but if you’re good at science then I think you’ll be okay. If that’s the only class you’re taking for summer, then I suppose it would have your undivided attention as compared to the school year, and also the curves would be nice since during summer not as many students are enrolled in the class. I didn’t have to take LS for my major, but I did have to take Chemistry 153A plus lab and I got an A+, but keep in mind, I loveeeeee Chemistry! :)

To hellanorcal: You won’t be able to switch into Psychobiology, the department of Psychology is super strict with that, but you can switch into Neuroscience! Simply email the department and let them know that you want to switch and you’ll have to set up an appointment to see someone but yes! it is possible! Good luck to you!

do different housing plans cost more then others? Like i filled out the housing app and put a suite so is that gonna be different from a residence hall. Also, when can i apply for the parking “lottery” or will i automatically be rejected since i plan to live on campus? With the meal plan is that covered under expenses or is that just for things like shampoo, supplies, etc. Oh yah, and all rooms have access to cable?
