^
I thought I already answered this question (partially) for you? Pay attention! (jk)

Not all dorms have TV, as far as I know, only De Neve Plaza and Dykstra Hall have it (but I don’t recommend Dykstra). Your questions made me laugh more, btw!!! The meal plan is only that…for meals, nothing else. Everything else (I mean it) everything else you have to buy. When I say, UCLA is trying to get every penny from you, I’m not lying, and you’ll see that soon enough, lol.

Yes! Of course housing plans cost more than others! For example, I’m in De Neve (private bathrooms) and have a double! Exceptionally more than say a triple with a shared bathroom. All of this information is available in the Housing website, a simple google search will help you out.

I have no idea with the parking lottery, but as far as I know, if you have good reasons to have a car on campus while you live here, they may give it to you. For example, if you have a job off-campus or something of the sort. Although I have met someone who lives two floors up who got a permit and she doesn’t do anything (have a job, let alone off-campus), so you may get lucky!

PS-I’m curious, where do you live in the IE? (if you don’t mind sharing that is!)

I live chino hills. hmm, it sounds like having a car may be a bigger burden than a psitive thing, but i will still try to get a permit. So when the FA estimates 16000 for housing, is that for the best dorm? haha i think my questions amuse u because I cant understand for the life of me, what 16000 dollars is spent on for housing?

New user here. I have been accepted to UCLA as a transfer student from a CC. Although part of me figures that I should be an off campus student (just to save some $$) I just can’t see myself doing the whole commute thing every day or so for the next two years. So I am really considering living on campus, but my issue with that is the whole sharing a bathroom with an entire floor. I am a huge germaphobe when it comes to that space even though I’ve read that they’re cleaned regularly. In short I’d really love a private bathroom! lol Any recommendations as to which dorming halls I should look into that could best fit me? I assume our living arrangements are picked for us, correct?

^
Welcome to CC! I hope I can help! I agree with you actually. I live pretty close by to UCLA, but I couldn’t see myself driving everyday (when I don’t have classes I work all day) over here. Parking is…ugh, lol, and traffic is even worst. I wouldn’t recommend it either. During Fall Quarter I was constantly running around campus getting things done, I’m assuming you want to me productive these next two years, right? Well, imagine if you commuted, went home after your classes and then realized you forgot to submit some form or go see that professor you really wanted to speak about a research opportunity? That’s why I decided to live on campus! That and UCLA was paying it all too.
As for your other question, I’m somewhat OCD too. I have to wipe the seat before I sit down, even in my own house, >__<;; If you want a private bathroom, your options would probably be the off-campus university studios (I know there’s some where it’s just one person) or maybe some of the dorms that offer one person rooms but for those they’re a bit more…difficult to get. You would probably have to lie on your application, lol. Your living arrangements are somewhat picked for you yes, especially when they’re running out of space to put transfers in. This is why I recommend people to turn in their housing application ASAP so they are more likely to get the housing they want. If you want more information, check out the housing website, you can also submit a question there! Hope this was helpful, and if you have anymore questions, leave them for me below!

To jg2290: Oh, interesting! And to answer your question, not necessarily! I might have to pay more for a double and private bathroom but I don’t have the best meal plan. They give you more than what you need is my opinion, but at the end of paying off your fees and the housing payment, I do think you have money left over.

In regards to housing for JC transfers, what are the chances for a transfer student to land a double occupancy in one of the Plazas? I ask because according to the UCLA Housing website, “Most transfer students who live on campus will be assigned to triple rooms.” I ask because coming from a community college my friend and I would like to dorm in one of the Plazas but prefer a double.

I was wondering what you thought about triples with private baths. I know girls are crazy (I am one so I can say that :D) so I would definitely need a private bath but I wouldn’t necessarily mind three people (since it’s cheaper than two). Would that be bad though? XD

^
The only place that is considered “on campus” as far as I know here on the hill, that has private bathrooms is De Neve. It might cost a couple of hundred dollars more, but I honestly feel so much more secure at night and when my roommate and I are out all day with classes/work, etc. I’m glad you’re opting for it! Anyways…I’ve seen a bunch of people triple up here in De Neve. I think there’s more triples than doubles actually, so go for it! Just remember to pick ‘private bathroom’ and I’m sure you’ll get it. As far as the whole three girls thing…lol…I think you’ll be fine, I mean…compared to six comparing the same one! Yeah, I think you’ll be fine! Besides, I’m sure once you meet your roommates and stuff, you’ll come to agreements about certain things and whatnot. Like with my own roommate, we always clean the shower if we leave hairs behind (we both have super long hair, lol) so it happens! Good luck!

Gilbert! I have a double with private bathroom and I honestly think it is because I turned in my housing application ASAP, as in the first week of May, lol. Remember to put in your friends UC ID on the housing application, but if when you do your application and put in plaza (or whatever the option is) and put “double” “private bathroom” for pretty much all of them, I’m sure you’ll get it!

^
I lol’ed. Actually, I remember reading an editorial in the Daily Bruin about this topic, but to answer you shortly–nope…at least not yet! Only if you’re married and send your certificate to housing, true story!

How far is Landfair from the middle of campus?

Are there gym facilities nearby?

Are communications classes in a centralized location?

How far are they from Landfair?

What are the rooms like in Landfair?

Is there a cleaning service for Landfair?

How far is dining from Landfair?

^
I don’t think they’re significantly farther…you would probably walk down and go through the dorms (De Neve) or go through the back where you’ll end up in Ackerman…hm, I think it’s a +5 minute walk compared to my walk (from the hill) which will be like a ~10 (depends on the speed too because when I first got here I would take like 17 minutes to walk to my class in Dodd, and after we got going, it took me 13, yes I know…but I like to know how long I take!) minutes to get to campus. If you’re referring to getting to Ackerman, it would probably be less than that.

Are there gym facilities near Landfair? Nope, gotta walk over to the gym in central campus. I think there’s small rooms where you can get on a treadmill or something like that, but not a full-out gym.

No courses are in a centralized location. I’ve taken courses in Dodd, CHS, Haines, Franz, Moore, PAB, etc. I didn’t know that the communications main office was in Rolfe!..but again, it varies.

See above, but honestly to get to North campus should not take you ~25 minutes. I have really good friends who have an apartment on Landfair with 8AM classes (they pass by De Neve to get to campus).

It depends which building you pick, but some are good and some are…not. I think they’re destroying some of them because they were out of date. Hopefully you get the good ones, I think they’re pretty nice, except the noise.

Nope, all you! One of the good things about the dorms is that you get Housecleaning once a week, not in the apartments, real life! Hahahaha.

If you’re referring to Westwood, it’s, I want to say a 10-15 minute walk. Obviously the apartments don’t have their own dining halls, lol. But there is a bunch of restaurants in Westwood—from BJs to CKP, etc.

You are a wealth of information, thank you. Will you still be at UCLA after May 20th? I’ll buy you something at Coffee Bean to thank you.

What do you mean by “noise?” Street noise or neighbor nosie?

Even if I live in Landfair, I can still purchase a meal plan correct?

So, IYO, De Neve would be the best place to live?

^
Not necessarily. Contrary to the popular belief last year on the forums, no matter what date you get, you will get into classes! You will! I had a date in mid-July and I got the courses I wanted. Once the schedule of classes for Fall come out, I’ll be sure to let everyone know. I’m sure our registration dates are coming up soon…hopefully!

To eyethink: I will be indeed! I will actually be here all summer…I mean ALL summer. But I prefer Starbucks!

Both. Like I said, I have really good friends whom live up there…I had the “wonderful” opportunity of staying the night a couple of times, and let’s just say the walls are thin. You wouldn’t believe how many people walk super loudly, it’s like their stomping.

I like the skip in 6. Yes you may! Refer a previous post in this thread.

I really like De Neve, but some people don’t think of it as “social” but again, it’s what you think of it. I prefer not to be woken up at 2am with a fire alarm drill as they tend to do in Sproul. Also, I like not to have to walk so much just to go to my dorm in case I forget something and have to rush back up the hill. Rieber Terrace/Vista are nice, they are, but the whole shared bathroom thing is…o__o;; One of my transfer friends who had summer session lived in Rieber Hall and got her brand new MacBook Pro and iPad stolen, UCLA didn’t do jack but file a report.

Nevertheless, I’m straying from my original point, yes! In my opinion, I really like DeNeve. I would choose it again in a heartbeat, but I feel that now that I’m a senior and I’ve gotten used to campus life, I can live in the off-campus apartments. Besides, it gives me time to actually cook!

You’re welcome and I look forward to our Starbucks meet and greet, lol. :)

I forgot to add this a couple of posts back but didn’t find out completely until today.

For everyone taking summer sessions: don’t trip about your BAR. The payments for students receiving financial aid are due June 20th, not the usual May 20th deadline. (You all probably don’t know this, but our BAR accounts have to be paid by the 20th of the month to avoid a hold on your account. If you have a hold on your account, you can’t access the gym or enroll in courses, among other things I’m sure).
