Any Questions for a Current UCLA Student(s)?

huh?

…

Ohhh I have a question, I hope this hasn’t been asked and I am just unobservant.

Will we be able to meet the roommates selected for us if we do the housing, but do we have to just wait until we accept our housing to meet them? Any idea about this?

^
First you have to accept your housing offer in June. Then in July, late July, you find out who your roommate(s) actually is/are and are given their phone numbers they listed on the application and vice-versa. It’s actually up to you if you want to contact them. I know some people who didn’t and some who did.

To dezziner: I’m actually on BruinView right now and I see jobs from Washington being posted on here! Yep, everywhere! (sorry for the delayed response…lol).

Kind of an add-on question regarding summer session:

I’m planning to take Math 61 and Econ 11 during the summer. Math 61 is only offered during session A but Econ 11 is offered both during Session A (Sproul) or Session C (McDevitt). Any opinions on whether I should just take them both during Session A and knock them out and have about a month and a half of downtime or split them up and take it slow?

^
I recommend you checking out the professors at Bruinwalk. Also, do you live near UCLA? I would rather take them during different sessions so you can get the feel for it and aren’t pressured and of course…get a better grade! But it’s up to you, definitely do your research!

@belkster
I heard Sproul is okay. Did you enroll? I should be in the same class as you.

I live in Westwood/West LA on Santa Monica off the 405 so the commute would probably just be a straight shot on the Big Blue. From what I read on BruinWalk and RateMyProf, Sproul seems to be the monotonous/mediocre lecturer and somewhat easy/short tests, but McDevitt comes off as an excellent lecturer and really knows his stuff but has very long/more difficult tests.

@iZychr yeah I’m currently enrolled in Sproul’s but considering McDevitt’s.

If I were to take summer session and lived so close, I would definitely pick coming session A&C. Just remember to get your Bruincard before summer session so you can pay only .35 cents on the BBB!

Hi Rhee,

Quick question. Is Bruinwalk the UCLA equivalent for RateMyProfessors?

^
Pretty much, but it also has other “aspects” to it, lol.

Another FYI:

If you guys don’t already know, I’m an assistant to the Student Affairs Officer for my department. Anyways, I’m in the process of learning a bunch about the SAO desk and I came across this paper which lists dates where we sign up for enrollment.

According to the Registrar, right now the departments are in the process of finalizing their schedule for the upcoming quarters. We won’t know our URSA enrollment appointment (for continuing students, it’s different with incoming/new students) until June 8th.

Enrollment doesn’t actually start until June 20th. By then we’ll be in summer session A, boo.

Anyways, in case anyone was wondering!

My parents are concerned that If I end up going to UCLA, I will end up partying and not do my studies. They think that UCLA is much as a party school as UCSB or Chico State.

They say that UC Davis is not a party school where people just study all day and hang out in coffee shops or in the library, similar to UCSD or brigham young university.

They told me this because I have a cousin at my dads side who went far for college, to UCSB as a 22 year old and dropped out when he was 29 years old. He didnt know what to do in life and ended up being a dj in SB. Now, at 30, he is back home with parents trying to figure out what to do with his life. They are worried that if I go to UCLA, they think that I will end up like my cousin.

I will be 24 by the time of fall quarter
I only live 40 minutes from UC Davis.

For financial aid, I am getting so much more in UCLA (21k) than Davis (14k)

Distance is not a factor but their concern is that I will loose the motivation to study once I am at UCLA. They say that If I am at UC Davis, they can check on me to see if I am studying or not.

I currently have a 3.84 GPA, involved in numerous organizations in and out of my community college. My parents are proud of me doing all of these activities and maintaining a high academic record.

What are your thoughts on this? Thank you.

To be very very honest, every school you attend is a party school, and if we’re going based on that factor, UCSB is known to “THE party school”. Even students here at UCLA know it.

Like I have said many many many times…UCLA is what you make of it. Sure, you can attend parties every day/weekend/etc, but that’s up to you. Out of all the time I have been here, I can honestly tell you that I have not attended ONE party (maybe in my department, but that doesn’t count). Have I gone clubbing? Sure, ONCE. You set your own priorities. I have a transfer friend who’s roommate goes out Thursday-Sunday and that’s fine with her, lol.

Again, it all depends on the individual. I have WAYYY too much stuff going on right now, seriously, and the LAST thing on my mind is that.

Let me know if you have more questions, but you seem dedicated right now, and don’t think this will even be an issue.

how do you apply for USAC?

^
Google is your friend! Actually, elections for next year were this past week. Hope this helps:

hey tiffany. last week a student or ucla worker called me and told me that i need to set up my educational planner on myucla. but for whatever reason i can’t seem to find it on myucla. do you know what it is and how to set it up?

^
Yep! It should be a little white icon once you sign onto my.ucla.edu, it’s on the top center of the page.

I have a few questions:

(1) If I apply for housing, but decide to turn down their housing offer and opt for an apartment instead, what are my penalties? I only want the dorm option as a fall back if I don’t get an apartment.

(2) When are financial aid grants disbursed, and in what sized bulks?

(3) How are university apartments?

^
1)I’m not quite sure I understand. You applied to housing in which you put both dorms and the apartments? You would only get one option either the dorms or the apartments, they decide.

2) Three separate dates where FA gives you money and typically it’s the week before or after the new quarter starts. The amount of money varies from student to student so I can’t give you an exact number.

3) Read previous posts, I’ve answered it already!
