Hey Tiffany, thanks for telling us about orientation. I was just wondering, do you remember more or less when we get our first financial aid disbursement for fall? Will it be before we start school, as the first housing payment isn’t even due via the financial aid payment plan until October?

I do remember actually, it was the week after instruction began. If you look on the housing website, there is a “plan” I think it’s “G” or something that is labeled Financial Aid/Quarterly. Housing and the FA office inform each other of their deadlines/when they get out the money. If for some reason, the FA office does not distribute the money on time, Housing sends out an email and let’s you know of the new deadline, this happened twice this past year for us. Hope it helps, don’t worry too much, because really–that’s out of your control.

Yep that helped! Thanks a lot!
So if I show up around 9 or 10 can I still go pick up my bruincard or is there a certain time frame where i can do that?

I’ve been placed at Rieber Terrace and feel it a waste of time to apply for UCLA parking, considering the competitive nature and point based system.

Therefore feel my only other alternative is a nearby parking garage, though hear those can be pricey. Aside, i’m sure those parking garages aren’t a 2 minute walk away from my front door.

I guess i’m just wondering what solutions UCLA students have come up with.

I would imagine I wouldn’t be driving all that much once at UCLA; needing only to go to class and perhaps for a bit nearby. The weekends seems that a car would come in handy…iono.

I live about 30 miles away from UCLA at the moment, so was thinking about just leaving the car at home with the folks and getting picked up on those weekends I decide to go home.

To holidays: To be honest, I honestly think everything is walking distance, (keep in mind I walk 3 miles or more each day) but yeah…I wouldn’t waste my time or money applying for parking. I have a bunch of friends who sneak their cars in and park somewhere near campus that doesn’t require them to have permits, lol. Students would rather do that than have to pay, but I really don’t see a need in a car unless you have a job or for certain have to go home every week or something, that’s just me though.

To calile89: I think if you show up at around that time, there will be a line since Freshman orientation is going on too…but regardless, yeah you can show up early and head on over to get your bruincard, it would be easier!

You have to file a blue petition. Depending whether or not you are AAP/College, they can provide the form for you. Actually I think you can get it online, just google UCLA blue petition and it should give you some information and then a copy of the form. The process does take a while to process so it’s good that you’re doing it now and not later.

I got my spring grades this week and requested for my final transcript yesterday but I was told it was going to take about 2 weeks for UCLA to receive and process it. My orientation is next week (July 8) and I don’t think my final transcript will be received in time for it. Will this affect me in anyway like for registering classes? Thanks!

That’s a good question actually! I remember for my Orientation, one of the students brought a copy of their transcripts but only because she needed to show she completed one course so that she would be able to enroll in one here (a pre-req)…did that make sense? Unfortunately the OC can’t really do anything about it because they get your DPR ahead of time, it tells you what has recieved unit credits or just credit. So long story short; you’ll have to wait for them to process it. Hopefully you don’t hav any pre-req courses there?! But they will update your DPR with what they have already, no worries.

I didn’t bring a laptop to my Orientation, instead I brought my iPad, which was a bit more convenient for me. I also don’t recommend bringing a laptop either. It’s going to be hot, you’re going to be going all around campus, and I personally wouldn’t want to carry it, but again–your decision. When the time comes and your OC lets you head over to Covel to research for your courses, you will be able to use a computer lab either in Covel or in the dorms (Rieber Hall). Afterwards, once you are ready to register for your courses–you have to use your OCs laptop(s) and nothing else. They will get mad at you, they actually don’t even allow you to use your own laptop to register for your courses. So, again, I don’t recommend it. Unless you’re super OCD and want to make sure you are able to research your courses, Wi-Fi isn’t that great IMHO, lol.

hey i just got my efan for the school year and I was wondering…i got a University apartment (gayley towers) for this upcoming school year…so in terms of financial aid would my housing be considered ON campus or OFF campus?

everyone i have asked says its still on campus cuz its from the school but now I don’t know what to put on my efan…hmmm…

University apartments are off campus, hence the name: off campus university apartments. They are off campus because you don’t have to have a meal plan like you do if you’re at the dorms, which is why they’re more expensive to live in and hence–get more financial aid for living in them.

If you bring something like a back pack or basically something you can store things in, they won’t allow it inside the dining rooms. It’s their way of knowing you don’t sneak out a bunch of food. I know people who do take their laptops inside but I mean…you’re going to go eat…lol.

Hi Tiffany, I was just wondering does UCLA allow students to take classes that are requisites of another class at the same time? Like for example, many psych classes require 100A, so can you take 100A and other classes that require 100A at the same time or is that a no no? Thanks!

I am freaking out about all these good classes with exceptional professors being closed. What are my chances to getting into a good class this Wednesday in orientation? Is there reserve spaces for us new students? Or are we basically screwed? :(

Ha ha! If they’re trying to assure students at orientation aren’t sneaking out food, I’d say we’re already off to a bad start.

Have you ever been to the Philosophy building, Dodd Hall? Is it nice? The UCLA Philosophy web page is one of the ugliest things I’ve ever seen, so I’m worried about everything else in the department.
