Any Questions for a Current UCLA Student(s)?

sorry if you have already answered this, but when do the finalized financial aid awards come out?

i know what we have now is an estimate, but when the final ones come out is that when we are officially able to “accept” our awards.

Hey Tiff once again lol :)

So you said in a previous post that Psych students will be enrolled in Psych 100A since they have to take it during the fall. My question is, will incoming psych students such as myself and other transfer be stuck with Mcauliffe? According to the fall schedule only him and Nandy will be teaching 100A during the fall and since Nandy has crazy better reviews than Mcauliffe should I assume there will be no room for us incoming transfer in Nandy’s class? Mcauliffe doesn’t sound like fun so I’m hoping to be able to get a choice lol (I’m in session 202 btw in case this matters). Who was your psych 100A teacher and what did you think about him?

Finals are done…I should be going home…but I won’t be until Friday…sigh…having a job and lab research…anyways!

To passwordis123: Were you possibly on an outdated link? That works fine for me!

To shsjj: Your parents can come to Orientation with you, but it’s another $100 dollars and they have to sign up for it (this information should have been in that little blue brochure you got in the mail), and it’s a separate orientation for them. While you do yours, they go off and do something else.

To uclakid: I did answer it before. In July.

To jaynami: There will be open spots…sooner or later. I think I got Nandy…don’t remember anymore…I can’t believe it’s been a year since I’ve been here…time flys! So don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll be able to get into whichever one, I really didn’t care…LOL.
It doesn’t matter what Orientation session you are really, people drop out at random times, trust me.

Hi Tiffany,

This thread has become such a great source of information!
I was hoping you could talk a bit about the Honors program at UCLA.
I plan on attending graduate school and was wondering whether being in the Honors program is advantageous, or do you believe it is better to simply work towards a higher gpa as a regular student?

Alright, I have a question regarding financial aid but I don’t think it has been asked.

I applied for summer financial aid past what is listed as the priority deadline, April 30th. I noticed in the brochure however, that it says this applies only to continuing students, and entering students are considered priority if they filed their Fafsa by March 2nd. I am hoping you can confirm this if it is true. I applied pretty late for aid since I hadn’t decided on going to summer session until last week, and I am worried that I won’t get enough aid to pay for it.

Also, I haven’t enrolled in classes yet because I don’t want to get stuck with a $150 fee because I couldn’t attend due to not getting the aid package I need. Will this affect my eFan? Should I just suck it up and enroll in the classes and risk the fee?

Sorry for these probably ridiculous questions. I just don’t want to risk messing up my aid stuff or my units.

^
Your situation confuses me to no end, haha! Okay…so let me get this straight…you applied for summer financial aid…? How is that possible if you didn’t even sign up for classes?! That’s not right. The only thing you actually had to do to be considered for summer aid is fill out a sheet which confirms your units and if you were planning on being on or off campus, nothing else.

So…unless you’ve filed that page out online, you’re pretty much not going to get much or anything at all for summer aid, sorry. All summer award letters have been issued out already. I have a friend from work who didn’t apply by the deadline and when he went to the FA office to ask, they told them that there was nothing they could do. He only got like $500 dollars or something like that.

To gcarrillojr: It’s not really important. I think what would be more important is having an honors or senior thesis. Anyone can take an honors course or have an honors contract, but (obviously) it’s more work than the regular work load. It’s nice…you get to have something on your diploma and attend the college honors ceremony…but do graduate see that as “wow this person was in honors?” not really. Hope that helps!

It’s Friday! I’m moving out of DeNeve and having my epic one week summer vacation! Hopefully I’ll still be able to answer questions!

-Tiffany.

Hey Tiffany,

Glad you finished up and get a short vacation now! I was wondering, do you think that around 24 classes in 2 years is possible? I want to only take 3 courses my first quarter to get adjusted, but do you think a consistent 4 classes a quarter after that is reasonable? I’m an English major by the way. I’m just trying to figure out my potentials when it comes to double majors or a minor. Thanks!

^
Hello! Hope you’re doing well and enjoying your own break!
As for your question, I would say it depends on the person. Counselors strictly are against it for transfer students. I definitely don’t recommend it either unless you’re able to keep up with the demanding coursework. Your major alone tells me you’re always going to be reading. I suggest taking the three courses during the fall like you plan on doing and then decide whether or not you can handle adding another course to your load. Again, it is different with each person. For myself, it’s exhausting. I find myself sleeping three hours a night, working my 20 hours and then lab research for 10+ hours a week. It’s a pain. Also something to consider is the actual class. Some courses are more difficult than others. When you plan out your schedule keep this in mind. Go on bruinwalk and check ratings.

Hope this helps! I’m off to my lab!

hi tiff  I hope u had a fun short vacation.

quick question:

I can’t find on the UCLA website the cost per class. The only thing I can find is the chart with an overview. I want to know if it’s like $300 per class. you know like how in CC it used to be $20 per unit and each class was 3 units so a total of $60 for that class.

Hi everyone!

Hope you all are having a nice week off, I know I am! I’m back home in Korea and I love it here! I can’t believe I have to move in this weekend again…it’s a drag!

Anyways…

To KidKrasher: Thanks! Here is what you were looking for: [Fees-Fees fees](http://www.summer.ucla.edu/fees/fees.htm)

Thanks for all the help Tiffany! Glad you’re having a good time on your mini vay-cay :))

^
As always, you’re welcome! Maybe we’ll see each other during summer session?! Hahaha.

Let me know if any of you all have any questions!

Hi Tiffany,

I Hope you are enjoying your vacation!

After having looked over the UCLA schedule of classes for the Fall, I noticed many courses list the instructor as “The Staff”. Do you have an idea of when will the instructors be assigned to these courses?

^
It probably won’t be able to show until much later! So here’s what happens…the Student Affairs Officer from each department has deadlines that have to be completed before the registrar puts up this information. Usually the case that happens is that the professor who is going to teach doesn’t know it yet/hasn’t confirmed and thus they put -The Staff- but it will be filled in, hopefully by the time your Orientation comes by!

In other news…summer housing assignments are OUT! I got my email minutes ago and I’m so hyped! I have no roommates! My bestie is only doing summer session C so we couldn’t room together but yay! I’m hoping I get the place to myself all summer! (:!!!

hey tiff i got housing for westwood palms apartments. its a 2 bedroom 3 person setup. im just wondering if you knew how they determine who gets the room to them self…

^
I think they determine that by who pays more, or agreed to have a single room, does that make sense? The person who pays more a month/quarter gets their own room and the other two people share the room. I think I saw someone else on the forums who got Palms too!

Hey Tiffany! Thanks for answering the million housing questions I post lol I submitted a CAR for a triple in De Neve which…I hope I get it but if not oh well XD

So I plan to suffer through Orientation and ask tons of noob questions that will grant me a million eyerolls  However I was just wondering…is the class selection thing confusing? I’ve seen my major sheet so I would just… take whatever I need to, right? lol I guess my questions is is there anything funky about signing up for classes or is it straightforward?

Thanks :D

^
Hello! No worries, I’m here to help for the time being! I hope you get your request, De Neve is awesome! I miss living over there, hahaha.

So Orientation…it’s long…lol. I think the process at first might seem a bit confusing, but don’t worry, your OC goes over everything. And if you still have questions, you can ask a friend in your group (you’ll socialize, don’t worry) and I’m sure they can lead you the right way. Or you can ask me! Hahaha. So don’t worry.

When’s a good time to be at orientation? I know the site said 730 but just wondering. Also are we done by exactly 9pm?

^
To be very honest, unless you want to wake up early and hear a boring talk, don’t go so early. I went after 11AM and I was fine, we hadn’t even gone with our OCs yet. After the talk in Moore (I think that was the building they had the talk in last year) the students THEN get to meet up with your OC, I think up until that point it’s okay to be late.

Also, if I remember correctly, your enrollment appointment begins at 8PM exactly. Sometimes it does take a little longer, because your OC has to go through EVERYTHING and you can’t sign up with your own laptop (so don’t bother bringing one to their room) so it might take a while for you to actually enroll. But the day is pretty chill, it might be hot though, so bring a water. The money you pay for Orientation actually gets you a $10 (I think!) food credit on your Bruincard and you and your group and OC have lunch somewhere on campus.

So…to answer your question, lol, sometimes. I remember staying until 9:15PM because my OC had to get “approved” or something for me to enroll in a non-enrollment course (you’ll learn about that during orientation).

Oh and before anyone asks…yes you can bring your laptops, but I rather just use a computer in the dorms or at Covel. It makes you actually look around campus, lol.

Hope this helps!
