Any Questions for a Current UCLA Student(s)?

looking back which housing building do you recommend for a transfer student?
thx

@Rheel: Quick question, if I don’t see regents scholarship in my Provisional Award letter, then I did not get Regents scholarship right?

ABOUT CHANGING MAJORS: If you are planning to change into an impacted major, have a brief chat with your OC before you start planning out your schedule and stuff. It should not be a problem. Admissions has nothing to do with changing majors, they simply give you the “okay” to get in the school, nothing else.

To howardyan2: That is usually the case. When I saw my provisional award it was there. Keep in mind that very very few people actually get the scholarship!

To rshie002: I’m currently living, this is my first year as a transfer in DeNeve Plaza with my best friend. I chose suites in the housing application and listed private bathroom, which is why I ended up here, and I love it! Bringing a car if you live on campus will be a little…tough. They won’t give you priority. I’m not saying it’s not impossible, because I have seen friends who got the permit but you may get a bad lot or w/e. Triples are very normal, unless you want to pay more for a double! Remember to fill out your housing application carefully!

I will be back to answer the rest when I head back to my dorm, I’m at work right now, lol.

thanks Rheel. They only offered me a $4700 scholarship (plus financial aid), but it’s better than nothing.

Hey rhee, do you think the plazas are social? I’d love a private bathroom and everything but it would suck to get to LA and have a hard time meeting people (what with huge classes and all).

Hi Rhee maybe you know, the provisional admit that says to maintain your GPA - is there some breathing room with that?

Hey Rhee,

if i do decide to go to ucla, i’m thinking of getting an apartment off campus though i heard that ucla is in a pretty expensive area. are living areas outside of ucla (that are not too expensive) rare or plentiful? and are they far from campus?
also, do ucla students get free bus transportation?

Hi Rhee,
I was wondering, if you don’t mind sharing, what your wrote about for your regents essay as far as your goals after you complete your education?
thanks!

whoops just started a thread just like this -___- didnt mean to copy you :)

^
Hi Evan! I am so glad you decided to come back on here during this time! I remember how busy it was last year for us! I’m also glad that you’re doing great here at UCLA! Thanks for the information that you provided us, and please feel free to add to this thread!

To senor09: I would say that those statements are very much correct! Your experiences are what you make of them, sorry for the cliche sentence, but it’s true. When I was still in CC, I would come visit friends ALL the time here at UCLA and I knew that I wanted to stay here in DeNeve. A bunch of students however will say that it is very unsocial, but it’s what you make of it.

To panda89: It depends what kind of person you are. I wanted my own private bathroom and was not going to accept anything else, so DeNeve was the obvious choice. If you want more freedom, without meal swipes (ek!) go for the university apartments, etc. If you want more information, just leave a more specific question! Hope it helps!

To aninstance: I think the Plazas are decently social, no apartment crazyness though, lol. I loveeee having my own private bathroom, because as much as you want to trust people, and even though you do have to do a roommate contract, things do happen. If you decide to live here in DeNeve, I’m sure Housing will pair you up with another transfer and from there you can develop a social group, no problem!

To ideal2545: Definitely! I had a 4.0 and was freaking out that I wouldn’t be able to maintain my GPA, blah blah…but I called up admissions and they told me that as long as I kept a solid 3.0, you’re good. A C is perfectly fine, but don’t push your luck, hahaha. I kept focused and got my 4.0! Good luck! Stay focused, but don’t stress out TOO much!

To koella: Right NOW is the time when UCLA students are looking for off-campus apartments for next year. If you decide to go to UCLA, definitely get on it, because it takes a lot of time. You might get lucky and find someone who is looking for an opening, but it is rare. I don’t want to freak you out, but in May is when us fourth years find out if we get housing, and if we don’t…we’re off to hunt for our housing! Good luck! Bus transportation is tricky. Right now the Bruin Go! plan is: Big Blue Bus and Culver City Buses are .35 cents. No discounts for Metro, unless you fill out this TAP form and that’s long…Next year because of budget, BBB and CCBs are going to go up to .50 cents with your BruinCard. I hope this helps, and good luck! If you have any more questions, please feel free to let me know!

Edit: Sorry, I had to go back and re-read your post. It is a bit expensive for apartments in the surrounding areas, check out craigslists for estimates, I think the further away the cheaper they are. There are those small rare occasions where a great deal will pop on by though!

To ILoveLA24: I was very fortunate to have a friend who was accepted for the scholarship help me out with this, and this actually helped me/is going to help me for my Graduate School applications. Basically I wrote how I wanted to pursue my education and continue onto Graduate School to become a University Professor, lol. Grad Schools are all over that. I’m not sure if that did it…but I got the scholarship! Hope it helps!

thank you so much for your reply!

hello, so i didnt get my decision today. do you know how long after did they release the next bathch last year? i cant focus on my study because all the people i know got in and i still have to wait.

^
I’m sorry to hear that! I know how stressful it can be! Last year we didn’t have to wait this long! According to my friend and what happened last year, it should be about a week to a week and a half, no more than two weeks (though I doubt it). The decisions come out rolling, some may get them in two days, others will get them in a week! Sometimes, UCLA simply sends you your admission packet and you know you’re in. I’m not quite sure why they do this… Good luck and stay strong! I know its harder than it sounds, but it will only be for a bit!

^ how are you liking ucla rheel? Good to hear from you!

Thanks for all the good info Rhee! Just one more question. How does the regents thing work? Do they mail you suggesting that you apply? is it something you can find on your financial aid summary? and when do people usually find out information about regents/apply? is it after they get admitted?

Hey Evan! Everything is going great! I’m keeping my Regents (LOL) and focusing on getting into Graduate School here for Psychology or Medical School…here too, still deciding! Glad you’re doing well too! -Tiffany.

To koella: No problem! I’m here to help! The Regents Scholarship is for those students who have a 4.0 GPA (if you didn’t already know that). Basically they email you, you apply and do the essay, later on, if you’re accepted you get the letter that you got the scholarship, not a lot of people get it…:expressionless: After you are awarded with the scholarship, you will see it on your Financial Aid Award Letter. If you have any more questions, let me know!
