anyone?!?!?

We encourage anyone interested to apply. Because we don’t have minimal cut-offs and conduct holistic review no one is automatically in or out and you’ll never know until you try. All it costs you is an application fee (because you’re likely already completing the Common App for someone else).

You certainly are taking great courses and appear to be getting strong grades and you seem active and involved.

We would recommend that you take your SATs or ACT one more time. The middle 50% range for out-of-state students is 1380-1430/31-32 so you may want to try one of the exams again.

Just know going in that we unfortunately deliver more bad news than good but again, if you’re interested, you never know until you try.

You have some strong accomplishments (nice weighted GPA and class rank!), but your standardized testing is, as you know, on the weak side for W & M. If you check out the school’s common data set, you’ll see that your SAT scores are close to the 25th percentile for all admitted students. W & M Admissions above states the middle 50 percent for OOS students for CR/Math is 1380-1430, which is considerably higher. (And thank you for that info, W & M; several posters here have noted that it’s not available on the CDS, and it’s helpful to know.)

What other schools are on your list? One possibility that occurs to me is that you might transfer in with a strong GPA from another college if admission doesn’t work out this year. Have you looked at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg? It has a similar feel to W & M.

Thank you both for your opinions and advice!
I do realize that my chances aren’t the best but I will attempt to raise my scores this fall and apply :)

frazzled1: Thanks so much for the advice about the other schools. The thing is, the other schools on my list are so different from W&M. I thought I wanted a medium-large sized school. Based on this, I would apply to the University of Colorado, University of Michigan, University of Connecticut, etc. But then one day my friend and I were looking at other colleges and W&M came up. From then on I fell in love with it  The more I research it the more I want to go! Of course this poses a problem for my other school choices because now I am doubting myself and the things that I thought I wanted in a school. Since I love W&M, which is a small school, I am questioning my other schools which are larger. So basically I am in a dilemma where I am not sure what i want.

I consider W & M more in the mid-sized school range than small, since there are almost 6000 undergrads. But UConn, and for sure Michigan, are huge in comparison. Are you primarily looking at public schools? Are finances a major concern? Michigan and W & M are among the most expensive public schools for OOS students.

Have you done the CC College Search? It should be on the left side of the screen, near the top, under “Main CC Site.” It will let you put in all your major criteria for schools and help you turn up a more fine-tuned list. It only takes a few minutes - why don’t you try it and then post again with the results? You can also post for more general advice in the College Search forum.

Agree with Frazzled1 that W&M is mid-sized. We have 5800 undergrads and 2000 graduate students so with nearly 8000 students in total, we’re not small. We just seem small compared to most other public universities with tens of thousands of students.

It’s not uncommon for students to be attracted to several kinds of different schools. There are usually multiple good fits for each student. Maybe do more visits this fall or once you’re admitted to see which one is the best fit.

While W&M is expensive out-of-state, we’re generally cheaper by several thousand dollars than most of our peer institutions.

Re take the ACT. Buy a practice book and study in advance.
