Any thoughts about ISR?

My residence hall change request went through yesterday. I was originally put in PAR, so I requested a change to a double or triple in the six pack or ISR (I put both halves of the pack as my top 2 choices).

As of now I'm set to stay in Townsend hall (ISR).

Any thoughts about ISR from current students?

Note: I am an engineering student.

If you are an engineering student you will be at home. If you wanted to be social I heard 6 pack is the way to go

6 pack is indeed one of the more (if not the most) social dorms. ISR is almost the exact opposite. It IS filled with engineers, so you’ll meet people who have stuff in common with you for sure.

However, as far as socializing, it was described to me by everyone who lived there as essentially a tomb like experience. Food’s excellent there though.

I will also be an engineering student and will be living in the 6-pack. From what my sister told me, there are plenty of engineers in the 6-pack. She also said ISR is like 80% asians and not much socializing takes place, as stated above.

Actually what I heard is ISR is a pretty international dorm and it is social too

six pack is really loud, so unless you like partying a lot, dont choose six pack.

I’m in the 6 pack. I like partying but I hope this doesn’t bother with my sleep?
Please don’t say it gets loud in your room because of outside noise? :frowning: I’m a light sleeper

boramk - Yes, it will be loud. Almost all dorms no matter where you live are loud, and this is especially true in the six pack. I feel for you, though - I am a light sleeper too. Living in the dorms was tough for me for that reason. I liked the social aspects of it well enough, but I had a hard time sleeping. My best advice? Invest in a good pair of headphones. Listening to white noise was often the only way I could get to and actually stay asleep at night. I like simplynoise.com. Good luck. :)

Wow :(

Thanks for the heads up :)

I guess I’ll invest in some ear plugs as well as download that app from SimplyNoise
What’s all the noise though? People just talking really loud or dub step music 3am at night?

I’ve lived in the six pack for two years, and most of my friends are in the 6 pack as well.

It’s honestly not that bad. It will certainly be loud on thursday-saturday nights. Other days, however, (Sunday-Wednesday nights) are not bad at all.

HOWEVER, if you end up unlucky with a loud neighbor (or worse roommate), then you are out of luck. Though that can be true whenever you live.

Again, yes, ISR is one of the quietest dorms on campus. I do want to clarify also that it’s not literally dead with no one to socializing with. People there are just less social in general, so it requires a bit more effort to get to know the people on your floors.

One of the famous pluses ISR has for it, on the other hand, is the big TV in the lobby areas. People tend to gather there to play games all the time, so it’s not impossible to socializing there. You can always socializing elsewhere but sleep at the quiet ISR :)

tacklebeast is right, it will depend on who your neighbors are in your dorm. You might luck out and it won’t be so bad. How “bad” it is, though, is a relative scale (it will probably be worse for you since you are a light sleeper), but then again, for most people the noise eventually becomes a non-issue as they get used to it. Hopefully that will be the case for you too; it just wasn’t for me.

Most of the noise that woke me up at night was loud music, drunk people singing in the halls, slamming doors, talking - that sort of thing. It also didn’t help that the person who lived next to me liked to watch cartoons until 3 o’clock in the morning every single day and slept through his alarm clock constantly.

I lived in ISR last year, here are my thoughts.

Pros
-ISR is very quiet
-If you are not interested in drinking, it is not very hard to find people to hang out with.
-Great location, ISR is close to the main quad and engineering quad.
-Most of the students at ISR are in engineering, so you will fit in well.
-During the week, many people from outside dorms eat in ISR for lunch; it is a good way to meet other people.
-Air conditioning

Cons
-Lots of people in ISR stay in their rooms, so it may be difficult to make friends. However, the social life varies based on where you are in ISR. Wardall and the second floor of Townsend are more social than the rest of Townsend.
-The dining hall at ISR isn’t that great, and the food quickly gets old. You will have better food if you live at PAR, FAR, or the six pack.
