"Nope I'm not Filipino, eventhough everyone thinks I look Filipino.
When I transfer out I hope to be good in Spanish(I'm taking them for my major) but I also really really want to learn French. I know mandarin since that was my language of instruction when I was in Malaysia, but now my mandarin hasn't been too great because of the lack of practice. But I can still, read, write and speak it.
So you're an english major? are you going to take up any minors etc? Oh! And btw do you have any idea how many minors you can take up at UCLA?"

Yeah, I'm an English major because I'm gooder at it then all my classmates. hehe. Oh, I'm also minoring in Creative Writing. I don't think there is a limit on how many minors you can take a particular UC but there comes a point when it is no longer practical (I'd say two minors at the most). Is UCLA your top choice?

I don't know if you ever heard of the Filipino movie "The Debut" but the "making of" in the special features is pretty damn inspirational I think. It's all about the difficult process of getting a Filipino-American movie into American theaters. It's hard but you want them to succeed, it makes you wanna spread some pride The actual movie was kind of corny though."

Hahahaha, my friends always tell me about that flick. I know it has the most famous Fillipino actor in it (Roofio from Peter Pan) but I shall catch it sometime. Damn, I wish we could spread some Fillipino pride at Cal. We should start a gang or something.

Yeah I thought so, lol. Two minors does sound good enough. Yep UCLA is my first choice! I've been Bruin crazy since.. hell if I remember, lol.
are you from the Bay Area?

Hehe, nah I'm from hella Socal. Where are you from?

Ahh, UCLA used to be my dream school too but then stuff happened and I realized UCB was a much better choice for me. So keep your options open and apply to UCB!!! haha shameless plug for my university... =)

never too late to learn chinese or mandarin! My mandarin teacher in high school was a white man from who knows, guuuuurnsville, one of those little towns. He went to UCSB, fell in love with Mandarin, moved to Taiwan, married a Taiwanese. And now this white man is teaching us chinese kids mandarin, more than any of us would have known! It's funny, but still really cool.

lmao that's funny yams and i don't know much about korea...i guess china and japan keep taking the spotlight in asia to us americans. lol. I've always found them very beautiful though and the culture is incredible...I wish I had grown up in Japan...kinda. I guess you don't know unless you actually got to grow up in both places. America's pretty bada**. :)

I am kinda considering Berkeley, but I am not sure. I don't have too much space in my schedule to take up classes that Berkeley requires for the major they offer. And besides, UCLA seems to have a better program for my major.
And, I sitll want to be around my friends and family here, so UCLA sounds like a sweet deal to me. :)

I don't know much about Korea either. I myself have never been to China eventhough I am one(half though), lived in Malaysia almost all my life. And today I did my papers at the Fed. building, and I'm officially a US citizen now. :)
But I still feel sad about leaving my Malaysian citizenship.
Oh well, can't be greedy.
I've never been to Japan but I would love to. I want to see those blossom trees and hot springs in the snow! I wonder if December is a good time to go to Japan..

Are you staying on or off campus for berk?"

Interesting, I will be better able to spread my Berkeley propaganda once I am actually up there. So I will try again later. hehe. But what is your major? Oh btw, don't worry about the pre-reqs too much...I got into Cal with missing a good amount of pre-reqs. So don't let that stop you =)

I'm most likely staying off campus in a studio...

Cardinal:
for now my intended major for UCLA is global studies. Other schools would be international studies. And for Berkeley it's peace and security studies.
Hmm, maybe I'll give it a try, after you said that.
I just thought Berkeley would be very hard or impossible to get in even with a few pre-req's missing.
I guess it wouldn't hurt to try.. :)
A studio sounds cool, yeah on campus is expensive! Is the cost of living in Berkeley high?
Westwood is sooo expensive!! And I don't think I am willing to share rooms with strangers either..

Hmmm, I have no idea really hahah I just know my parents are going to pay for it as long as I keep my grades up. Boo another con of UCLA, I think Cal has way more options in terms of housing (I have no real evidence to back that up other than it seemed so much bigger when I visited). hehe.

i'm transferring UCLA in the fall as a Middle Eastern and North African Studies major and i'm planning on studying abroad next year.

Of course im going to have to take a 5th year at ucla but i really dont care much because the experience you gain in study abroad is so worth it. Plus, depending on the school you study at some universities abroad have a lesser tuition than your US school, and even sometimes is free!

I'm going to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem for one year, then Morocco for a summer (for intensive arabic).

Really, are there any full-breeds nowadays? Probably not.

I just came back from the Philippines on the 20th. Ask any competent local, and they'll tell you the abu-sayef ordeal is very overblown. I never felt unsafe there (unless I was in a dark alley by myself or something). I went to borocay (a resort island with lots of foreign investment) and there both mosques and churches--no problems.

Anyways, I'm thinking about joining the peace corps and volunteering over there. Or maybe I'll join my uncle who owns some sort of financial banking company and is a chairman of San Miguel Beer--the pride of the Philippines. Heh, I've only met the guy once.

Okay half. I guess there are not any full breeds left, but Johnny I think you are me.

Cause my mom's uncle used to be on the board of San Miguel Beer...damn that stuff is good. And my family still owns a bunch of stock(which we're trying to sell but for some reason there's a bunch of legal mumbo jumbo). But anyways craziness, it's a small world, you seem like you are me..I've never been to the Phillipines, don't speak a word of Tag and Phillipino Americans always look down on me for not representing the culture. I'm "one of those guys".

Anyways, back to the initial topic of this post with regard to the study abroad thing. I really want to go to Costa Rica, something fascinates me about the Latin American culture, spanish language, and I think I'm gonna try and go for a year like when I'm a senior and I will graduate there. Does anyone know anything bout that? I looked into the 130 unit requirement but I have AP units which don't count so I think that will be able to finish my remaining requirement and exceed the 130 units 2.5 years from now, thus graduating in Costa Rica. But I know there is some senior residency requirement thing that I should prob talk with a counselor about. Adios!

I'm on the UC EAP program in Beijing, China right now. It's been a week, and it's been very interesting! The Princeton program is also at the same university -Beijing Normal University.

I would love to go to europe but im not sure how many programs there are for math:( I guess I would throw japan in there too but theres just something about europe that I cant resist. I was thinking france, germany, spain( though Ive heard that they arent so nice towards mexicans), or maybe england(or maybe not because I would love to learn a new language).
