I recall reading that it was no biggie to be selected for this award, and that very few scholarships are actually awarded. My D just got notification that she is a semi finalist...Any others? It would be interesting to post here to see how many of us CCers actually get how far.
Good luck to all in your scholarship hopes!

What is she a semifinalist for? A scholarship? If so, did they send a solicitation to buy something that recognizes here getting the honor of being a semifinalist? An example would be if you're offered the opportunity to get a semifinalist certificate.

I am sure that Who's Who gives the amount of scholarships that they advertise they do. If not, the organization would have been shut down long ago because of false advertising.

Where they get their $ is giving hundreds of thousands of students the "honor" of being selected for "Who's Who," which gives them the opportunity of buying overpriced books and other items. Whether or not the selected students buy those items, they also can apply for Who's Who scholarships that really do exist.

Yes she is a semifinalist for a scholarship, and no she never purchased anything, just sent her bio. They sent a form to apply for their scholarship shortly after, just a few basic qstns and a $4 processing fee. (I know, that part is unusual.)
Now she has another form and an essay qstn. No fee this time. They also give a website with names of other winners by state...so of couse the scholarships do exist.

I just got the form for the semifinalist application. I was a little leery of the $4 fee, but it looked legit. Hopefully this results in some money.

A senior at our school received the scholarship last year.

I'm a semifinalist and I got notfied early march. I'm just waiting for finalists notfication.

^ Ditto, notified about semifinalist status in march

Cool.
Here's the list of winners from last year.

I assume it's a one time only amount?

Ummmm, do not take this seriously!

I don't really take only 1000 seriously (but I'll take it), but I do believe they paid out or they would not be in business.

Its not a full list for 2002-2003. Our son's name is not listed.

Good Luck.

Congrats itstoomuch, aren't you glad all the naysayers didn't send in their bios? Better chance for your son!

I thought this was a scam?

my brother got one of these scholarships four years ago - it's legit...and if you get a scholarship they actually give you a copy of the book for free. lol!

Zomg, yeah I paid the $4 fee, but felt a little wary. The semi finalist notification calmed me a bit. And today, I just got the notification that I won a $1000 scholarship! W00T! And the free book that they solicited to us before hahahaha.

Funny, my S was a NMSF & then became a NMF & never got any "Who's Who" ap (or maybe he/we tossed it without looking closely at it). Anyway, he got some nice merit awards anyway. Good luck & glad you got the $1000 award!

Haha yeah, it's easy to mark as a toss-away. I guess it makes up for me losing my NMF money too (selected a safety state school scholarship and didn't end up choosing it). Slightly.

I got in the book, but no scholarship.

I got the application in the mail and tossed it. I figured, if it was actually a major/important award, my school would know about it and my GC would have talked to me about it. She did when I got the notice that I might be NMS Commended/Semifinalist in September (at least Commended)

My friend recently was a top 10 finalist and was invited to DC for an awards ceremony. He won 5 thousand dollars and was very surprised.
