Anybody else in Forest/Southeast?

I'm just wondering who's gonna be living in Forest or the Southeast neighborhood next year. What's Forest like for those who've lived there before?

The Southeast dorms are the nicest but the least social.

I know someone in there. They aren’t happy AT ALL. Nice rooms, yeah. But…looks like no “ensuite” bathrooms and…am I seeing this correctly NO FOOD? Who would want to be there?

But…they’ll never be able to please everyone, and each dorm has it’s drawbacks. Good learning/growing/toughening/dealing experience I guess.

No food? I see a Landes Dining room, plus Hoosier Cafe at Reed, and El Bistro at Reed. Can’t everyone eat there? My son got Reed as his dorm. Any info?

It’s not that bad. There aren’t many freshman dorms where there are “ensuite” bathrooms. Briscoe also has no food, as does Teter (I believe?). Forest is the Southeast equivalent of Briscoe and, from what I hear, the most fun/social of the Southeast dorms.

My D has LOTS of friends at IU. She calls Forest THE most anti-social. And, the dining room you see isn’t open very often (I think it’s used for functions). Read has several food locations. Yes, anyone can eat anywhere. It’s a long and personal story but there are a few reasons food is an issue for our particular situation. But…even for all for ALL kids…still not much fun to make three treks per day out to get food. When it’s 6am or 10pm and dark and 15 degrees below zero…much less so.

FWIW…I’ve known people who attended IU at many different times (graduation in the area of 1950s, 1970s, 1990s…and MANY kids who are there now). If you’re not the crazed, drug, sports, loud McNutt party type - Read has a great reputation as a wonderful dorm, withstanding the test of time. But, I’m prejudiced because we’re heavily into the arts.

All,

Would you please help with the following questions?

1) Would it take 3-5 minute walk from Forest to READ to get food?
2) For a student with Chemistry major, how much time would it take to go to classes (walking) from READ/FOREST?
3) How is the bus system?
3) Where would Honors students stay in Southeast, Central, and Northwest?

Thanks

Ace:
The only things I can give MINOR details about are:
People’s opinions vary about the bus system. Some say it’s great. But, just last night I was talking to someone who now lives off campus. They talked about how a freshman might as well not have their car…not worth it to walk there even to go to grocery. BUT, of course that depends on where you live and if you’re lucky enough to live near a weird/available/public type parking place. They said it would take 30 minutes to walk from Forest to where freshmen have to park. I said “What about the bus?” They said, first you wait on the bus, then you ride the bus, then you still walk anohter 15 minutes, so …? I’m sure it’s great for a lot of things though.

As for honors dorms…I’m certain there are honors dorms in Forest/Southeast…that’s where my D is. But we THINK there are also honors dorms in Read. That’s all I know. Just bumping so you can get the REAL scoop on your questions.

And, more for “fran”…FYI, I just met still ANOTHER person today whose girlfriend was in Read…maybe…5 years ago. Same thing - they loved it. Read is quiet ISH, academic ISH, and performing arts.

Thanks R124687…I am fine with Read, but not sure my son is. He is not into performing arts at all, much more into sports and academics. He has a room mate picked out, so not sure if they would move them at this point…any thoughts? I think they were going to call the housing office to see what, if any, options they might have.

Housing allowed my child to be put on a waitlist for a different LLC (because she did not understand the system, and put the wrong thing down). I’ve also found out you can fill out a “yellow card” at orientation to ask about a change. I don’t know if that’s ONLY for LLC. I doubt everyone’s minor requests where they’re unhappy about dorm/location can be entertained. And I frankly doubt she’ll get to change. Probably just allow it to keep people quite. But, she has some special needs. Someone on here said that they filled out a request for about 3 LLCs that were in the building they wanted to be in…and they did get that building. ??

yeah i’m pretty upset with my Forest assignment

Here is a recent IDS story on IU housing. Northwest is by far the most popular neighborhood.

[idsnews.com | Indiana Daily Student |](http://www.idsnews.com/news/story.aspx?id=76085)

I don’t know why everyone hates on Forest. McNutt isn’t as crazy as people are led to believe either.

I know multiple people who left southeast for McNutt because they wanted and expected a more social atmosphere, but were disappointed. They said crazier things went down in Forest than McNutt. From what I’ve seen and heard, it seems that northwest kids go out to party more (maybe because they’re closer to the Villas?) while southeast kids stay in to do it.

Forest is near the best food on campus and close to a lot of important buildings that you’ll no doubt have classes in.

One of my friends transferred out of McNutt to Forest because the people in McNutt can be really harsh. I served on judicial board, and we would get tons of kids there regarding bullying. The kind of bullying you would think ends with elementary school.

In the end, it has nothing to do with the dorm though. It has to do with the people there.

This is college and this is IU so there are crazy things going down everywhere.

Don’t get so wrapped up in your pre-conceived notions.

I want to believe you Jigglypuff, but from the things I’ve heard from people that lived in Mcnutt, Forest isn’t really the place to be.

^^^snake, consider the source. : )

My daughter is NOT NOT NOT a “partier”. She would rather go to another college than live in McNutt. That said…she’s very SOCIAL . And, mostly would like to be around people like her. That’s what the LLCs are about. So, for us…it’s just a mistake we made when filling out the form. McNutt vs Forest is a bit “night and day”, eh? She always wanted Southeast (most people want NW and Central). I know a LOT of people who were in Read and loved it. And they’re people I admire (not the infamous IU party scene type). But…I know no one (so far) who has much good to say about Foster. My child will wither away to nothing if there is not a good social aspect/comraderie. One of you said it’s not about the dorm, it’s about the people. I think that’s what everyone is agreeing with. And like minded people tend to flock one direction or another and are also grouped together with LLCs. So…the dorm DOES represent the people in it (up to a point of course…there will be some diversity in each dorm…at least we hope…my daughter craves diversity…a lame dorm where everyone sits in their rooms studying 24/7 will not be a good environment for her…she needs a balance). But…they get what they all get - and they make the most of it - and it all works out for the better or worse - no use worrying/complaining…is what it is - EXCEPT that you can try to change at orientation. And if that happens, great. If not, make the most of it. It’s 9 months. An important 9 months, for sure. But…it’ll be OK. Luck to all.

Would you please share a little more on the “mistake” part? My twin boys will go to IU next year. One will apply for KLLC while the other one (in CAS) is considering Central. READ sounds good. Would your daughter have a better chance to get into READ had she chosen Honors floor in Southeast?

Thanks

The honors floor in Southeast is in Forest because that’s where I will be, and it’s the only one in that neighborhood.

My D is in honors Forest, but I believe REad also has honors floors (she has friends in it).

Ace: I won’t go into our “mistake” because it’s pretty defining. And a long story. We were told one thing about where my daughter would HAVE to be (do to several health issues)…and we were wrong to assume that information was correct. It’s more complicated than hopefully your decision will be.

At any rate…Read has always been a good choice for a lot of people. But…the “partiers” IU is known for, tend to go NW. And that’s FINE with me (and my child). Read is close to a lot of classes, has a lot of food, some parking (for D permit holders), and houses the SE performing arts LLC. But…you said your son was considering Central. Read is not in Central.
Just FYI.

gino and R124687.

Thanks. We plan to visit IU next month and will stay in the Memorial Union one night to feel the IU spirit. We will definitely look around different dorms and try the bus.
