Anybody going here in 2007?

OOS student.
Interested in Business.

Any comments, advice?
How's the Business Undergraduate Program?
Any idea about merit aid for out of state applicants? How many people get that Dean's scholarship?

Anybody? Anybody? Bueller?

C'mon, it's a big school. Some Duck is out there on cc. Talk to me!

I was accepted and it is high on my list, but I'm hoping for some scholarship money, since out of state tuition is a killer. Have you visited the school?

I visited in March but I didn't ask about $$ at the time. Maybe my parents did.
It's a nice campus with great spirit. Dorm rooms were small and on the older side. A rain and hailstorm cut the tour short so I know what I'm in for in terms of weather.
Going back for a second look after I hear from financial aid.

OK then. How about that Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl?

There have been 50 views to this post and one response. Talk to me. Quack to me. Tell me what you like about UO.

Update on some stuff -- U of O scholarship is reviewed in February, so I won't know until then about it. Other merit based scholarships are posted on the U of O website.

I met some people over the summer who were attending U of O and they all love the college. None were doing the business major so I can't help you with that, but the new building (Lillis Business Complex) is amazing looking and I like the solar panels. My friend is studying journalism there and I heard the architecture major was really good. I'm interested in science and languages. The science department doesnt' look as prominent as the science department at OSU, but the fact that they just spent a ton of money on a new science building means to me that they are serious about it becoming big.

We went in summer and had no rain. It was really sunny and warm and everything was green. Took lots of photos.

I've been receiving a lot of mail from them lately -- yesterday a letter inviting me to Scholar's Recognition Day in January (can't go -- too far) and a couple of letters from a senior and alumni going on about the university. Really nice feel -- I like that the school takes the time to really try and get a student to go there. But I was sold when I visited it.

Thanks for your impressions LD.
Hope we both get to live in Eugene next year.

I live here in Oregon, and I've visited every year for the past 3 years for the HS Model UN conference. I'll ramble about my thoughts on the place:

For me, it's a safety school. They guarantee you a spot if you're an Oregon resident and you have a 3.25 GPA and a certain SAT score. U of O isn't high on my list because I want to go to a place w/ a med school nearby, and our single med school is 3 hours to the north in Portland. (=hard to do pre-med research)

On the flip side, they do offer decent merit aid, and the town of Eugene is pretty cool. It's a good place to go if you're a liberal hippie (as if there are any conservative hippies, lol). The buildings are a little run down, but they're remodeling some of them. Also, their honors program is supposed to be among the best. I haven't done an actual college tour/sit-in on classes, though, so I don't know. Into classes are supposed to be big.

Sciences: I get the impression that U of O is supposed to be better at the life sciences than Oregon State--which is big on Physics, Engineering, etc.

Weather: Yes, Oregon does get a lot of rain, but it's not oppressively cold. We don't have much in the way of winter: just colder-feeling rain. Maybe one or two days of snow, if we're lucky. September and May are also really nice months to be there....nice and warm, very little rain.

If you have any other questions about the location or Oregon in general, post 'em. I'm just a lowly HS student, but I live here and can possibly help you out.

A lot of my friends ended up going to UO and most love it for the most part. My dad went there and loved it. I had to leave oregon though even though I want to live there a few years after college.

They seem to have a solid business program. The building is beautiful and brand new. My friends like the professors and the opportunities.

The weather isn't too bad, but I guess Eugene is worse than Portland because it seems to always be foggy. However, the spring (if you don't mind the rain), the summer, and the fall are absolutely amazing if you aren't dead set on sun and warmth.

UO has a great journalism program.

The dorms are old and tiny, althought there are some newer and nicer ones. Basically Bean sucks. Some of my friends live in bean and when I saw their room I had to leave because it was like a cell with tiny windows and no light. I liked the other dorms much better.

Tons of school spirit and great DI sports teams... I'm a Duck football fan since my football is pathetic.

Eugene is a pretty neat college town. It's not great, but there are fun areas to explore and hang out.

It seems if you are a solid student you'll get some money. Not sure about OOS, though. Most people at my high school who had 3.6+, decent SAT scores (1700+), and some IB classes got at least $500-$1500 a year. They really try to get top students, so they'll throw money at them. I had the full tuition scholarship. I received more mail from then than any college trying to get me to go, although USC did do a lot to try and get me to go.

The honors program is a good program, but I've heard bad things about the atmosphere, like social interaction. It's not for everyone.

Feel free to pm me any other questions about Oregon, UO, etc... If I don't know the answer I can ask a friend who goes there.

thanks for all the excellent information!
