I was wondering if anyone on here is applying after theyve had one or more years of high school. I just want to know what your experiences were with asking for recs, telling people etc.

I’m applying for the 10th grade… I didn’t feel I was ready last year, so I’m applying this year. The main thing is that you have to be patient with teacher recs because some of the teachers you have may have upper classmen who are applying to college, and they usually get superiority.

yeahh did you feel awkward when you asked? because i havent and i feel like it would be super awkward, or have you asked yet?

I applied as a repeat sophomore last year, and currently go to boarding school. I went to a public school that has never sent anyone to boarding school, and where my teachers had never heard of the boarding schools.
It was awkward at first, but you get over it. Like it was awkward explaining that I wanted to go to boarding school, and that I was applying for four- my teacher didn’t quite understand that it is similiar to the college application process.

The awkwardness is not bad at all though, all except my english teacher were extremely helpful and supportive. If you want it badly enough, momentary awkwardness with a teacher shouldn’t defer you from asking for recs. Good luck (:

Thanks! I’m thinking of applying as a repeat sophomore as well. Was it a good choice?

Yes, it definitely was. It really is very common, theres at least four people just in my dorm that are repeats. The people coming in as juniors have a much harder time making friends, and plus it’s tough adjusting to boarding school life, so having this extra year to just get situated is nice. Plus, it has given me a lot more flexibility in my schedule since almost all my requirements are done. Also, had I come as a junior I wouldn’t have had the time to do all the stuff that I want to do here, like do summer trips to Spain, or School year abroad possibly, things like that… At times I wish I was a junior so I could go to college already, but in the long run you don’t notice it at boarding school, you don’t feel older than everyone.

@helloel: I wouldn’t put off asking for (and handing over the forms) reccos another minute. It’s going to be even more awkward when you have to ask teachers with just a month to go until January 15th…

Okay thanks! I was going to ask my advisor today but he left early. I’m doing it first thing tomorrow!
