Anyone bringing a safe?

I got a safe for Christmas two years ago and I'm contemplating bringing it since I'll be in the dorms. Would you guys bring a safe if you had one?

It would be good to store the little things like iPods, wallet, etc....and it could be used as a night stand.

Though I don't want to give my roommates the wrong impression....though some roommates do steal from their own roommates so...

What do you think?

That’d be a waste of time imo. Just keep ur room locked.

it would be really heavy to bring on the plane

No only that what is stopping someone from stealing the safe and work on opening it somewhere else. If someone is determined to steal they will.

For me… I may bring a small safe, not entirely sure what I’d keep in it, and I’d stick it under the bed or in the closet. I think my roommate and I are both the type of people to always make sure the door is locked, so I’m not worrying. (Besides that, I’m close enough to home that I can keep anything expensive over there and just get it on the rare occasion I need it.) There’s no harm is having a safe if you can transport it easily.

I think if my roommate brought a safe, I would feel offended. I would think you assumed I was a thief.

I wouldn’t be offended, but I’d think of my roommate as being a bit paranoid. What are you going to put in it? Canned goods and bottled water for the apocalypse?

more like important documents.

Guess you haven’t heard that Jeff Foxworthy standup?

The point of one of his jokes, if the safe is portable, it’s useless.

A safe, no. But depending how my room is laid out and what not, my mom is trying to convince me to bring a footlocker/trunk. I don’t really want one, though if there’s room, I wouldn’t be too opposed to it, as it could be used for a number of things.

Luckily I live 2 hours from campus, so if I really need something, or really don’t want something, I could always drive home and drop it off.

I wouldn’t bring a safe and I go to school 8 hours (driving) from home. There’s just no point…theft is pretty rare in dorms unless you’re being stupid (leaving your door open or unlocked, letting people you don’t know into your room, etc.). Or at least it is at my school.

I’m bringing a footlocker, they make good furniture and you can just stow it in the bottom of your closet. Not to mention you can keep out-of-season clothes in it and use it as luggage.

You don’t see the big picture do you?

A safe is a GREAT deterrent to those who are in the act of stealing. It’s much hard to pick up and run with a safe (a safe that weighs 70 pounds) or steal a safe COMPARED to putting an iPod or wallet in your pocket. It’s much harder to steal a safe, and would require more time to steal it.

Thank you for this. I was thinking the same thing as I mentioned in my first post.

Do people at school tell you that you’re funny? Work on your jokes young gun…

As aforementioned I’d put in my iPod or wallet and money or Tv tuner (that I’d use with my laptop to watch tv). Small things that could otherwise be picked up and taken in my presence if I turned my back and couldn’t notice initially.

I think bringing a footlocker would be a good compromise. It probably won’t offend your roommate and it doubles as additional storage or can be used for packing belongings when it’s time to move out.

You might want to check if the dorms already have a safe because some schools do provide a safe for you. Either that, or like a drawer with a lock on it.

Cboe…you are seriously considering bringing a 70+ pound safe with you? Really.

I just saying if someone wants to steal something bad enough they will. If there’s a will there is a way.

Plus I would be laughing my butt off if I show someone carrying a 70+ pound safe into college.

^^ it’s actually 50 pounds :).

^^Ridiculous. If you must lock up a wallet and an ipod lock it in a drawer or something. A 50 lb safe is way overkill.
