Anyone considering Catholic University?

CUA is slowly emerging as a favorite for my D. The location, honors program and opportunities that came with both may be the tipping point for her. Of course, we are still awaiting the financial aid package which I understand will be sent out end of next week. Anyone going to Odyssey Day in April?

i was accepted to catholic as well, my brother is a sophmore there and has really found his niche. getting involved quickly should be your D's first priority if she decides to attend. overall great school, nice/clean dorms, decent food, beautiful campus and friendly people. attedning odessy day is what confirmed my brothers enrollment. good luck!

Thanks for your positive response CollegeKid. We'll see what happens in the next few weeks....it's a very exciting time. Any decisions on where you'll be next year?

My son also liked Catholic. I visited there with him and we both liked the campus, location, academics, and Washington, DC. The Basilica is really amazing, too!

My son is planning to enroll at St. John's University. I think he favors NY over DC. Ever since we took him to NYC as a kid, he has wanted to be there.

It is definitely a great school with great location and endless opportunities.

Dennis~
Thanks for your input and congratulations on Cornell :)

kmaq- I went to law school at CUA, though about 100 years ago. Am back in DC frequently. Campus is a bit out of the city compared to GWU or GT, but very convenient to reach via Metro. Only a short ride to Capitol Hill. I lived elsewhere in the city while I was there. A very pronounced Catholic feel to campus. A very good school, nice campus.

Thanks for your first-hand account, who-knew.
I know the location is not as well-centered as GT/GWU/AU but from what I have read/heard, the Metro stop being right on campus makes all the difference in the world.
May I ask where you did your undergrad?

kmaqMom, I just spoke to my cousin who graduated from CUA last year. She absolutely loved it, she would return if she had to choose again. She loved the students, academics, and how she was always busy( work and play). She now works on capitol hill with a congressman. Just thought I should shared that.

Kmaq- Gettysburg. Lovely campus, great education (probably could not get in with today's standards!), but fairly isolated.

Dennis~ thanks for your post. It's great as CUA doesn't get a lot of love here on CC. Your cousin sounds like someone my D would love to meet :)

who-knew~ thanks to you also. I just wondered because my D is thinking grad school but it would be the reverse of you with CUA being her undergrad. She was also accepted to Allegheny in PA which I think could be described similarly to Gettysburg....lovely campus, great education but fairly isolated.

My friend got a scholarship offer today, anyone else? Just want to help her out.

i really don't have anything to add, but wanted to say i'm glad to see some attention to CUA! i think it's a hidden jewel!

A couple of years ago, the Washington Post surveyed college students in the Washington area. CUA students were the happiest about their choice of school. The irony was that CUA was second (or safety) choice for students who were rejected by Georgetown.

If I knew then what I know now, I would have applied to CUA (But back then, Washington, DC was a much rougher town)

another comment, and i know i'll be corrected if i'm wrong...is CUA in the northeast section of DC? that would be my main worry.

Yes, CUA is in the Brookland section of NE DC, happycollegemom. I hear this area may be tough but the campus itself is very safe and the Metro is right there. One of my D's other top choices was Fordham, also located in what some would consider a tough neighborhood. Certainly students on any urban campus need to be smart and aware but the city is where my D wants to be. Of course, talk to me after we visit next week and see if I still feel the same way! I appreciate your opinion hcm, as I have seen from other posts that your D is thriving at AU :)

Khipper~ I actually read about that poll somewhere not too long ago and I must say it made me smile.

Did your friend receive notice of an additonal scholarship, dennis? or is this her first notification of financial aid? We received our FA package over a week ago.

We have AU, Catholic and Fordham on the short list - very tough decision to make. Son accepted to honors program at Catholic only, and I think being in an honors program makes a big difference.

kmaqmom~ yes!!! DC is where it's at! and yes, my d wouldn't be anywhere else, meaning both DC and AU! and yes, again, if street smart as well as just plain practical, DC is an awesome place. i so much love it over NYC. best of luck!
amy~ yes, tough decisions. try to screen between DC and NYC as a starting point, then just between the other two. they have their clear differences, tho both in DC. good luck!

Ha, my D did just what you recommended happycollegemom but in reverse order. First she chose between AU and CUA and then between Fordham and Catholic. She still struggles a bit with NYC vs DC as she LOVES NY but she is so excited about CUA and being in DC. Actually, I am the one struggling because I love New York and Fordham but I'm afraid Fordham made the decision for us. Their financial aid just didn't make it feasible and secondly she wasn't offered Honors. Although that would not have been a deal breaker if the FA had been better, as Amy said we feel being in the Honors Program at CUA (or any school) makes a real difference.

Dennis173~ it just occurred to me....did your friend receive the Archdiocesan Scholarship? If so, WOW...that is a great accomplishment.

Is safety an issue at Catholic? This would be my biggest concern for my D.
