Anyone dread cold like me?

Hi,
I am looking for the best option(Dorm) IN UIUC.
I love UIUC.However, I think I am alittle afraid of UIUC's cold .
(I heard a lot about UIUC's unpredicable weather.)
I am an international freshman this year (I haven't seen snow in my former 18 year, though I feel sort of excitement of snow)

So I don't know the difference between heat and a/c.

Does every house in UIUC have heat,if it doesn't claim it in building feature?( I think if the house doesn't have heat or a/c, it would be too cold for a person to live, right?)

What's the difference between heat and A/c?Will you get cold if you only get heat? And a/c's only adavantage is that you can get cool in summer?

What about the heat in the corridor? If the dorm features heat or a/c,is that mean you wil get enough heat if you are not in your bedroom?( Most of the dorms only have shared-bath,Right?)will it be very cold on the way you get the baths or in the bathroom.

I am afraid these questions maybe too easier for people who live in the cold places for a long time in US,please don't laugh.

Do you have any suggestions for people like me who dread cold too much?
Any good dorm options?( I am IE major, girl)

Thank you, dear you all:)

tell your preference to the housing people, and they will answer all your questions…

It’s a good idea,Djperez91!
And thanks:)

All buildings including dorms have heat throughout but for about the first month of school year you won’t need it except for an occassional cool night. Only a few of the dorms have air-conditioning (ISR and FAR are the ones I can think of), which is not a necessity and is desirable only for about the first month of the school year when it can still be hot. If air-conditioning is on, heat is not (and not needed) and vice versa. During that first month, heat will be on as needed but usually is not needed, rest of year on and set at comfortable temperature. All of the dorms for freshman have shared baths. Corridors are warm, tiled floors will feel cold if barefoot.

Weather is generally hot (including some 90s) to warm Aug - Sep. Progression to colder starts late Sep and continues through Nov, Oct is usually a decent month although it can get very cool. Dec through February are the most brutal months – varies from year to year but can get a lot of snow and, late Dec through Feb, you can get some sub-zero (Fahrenheit) days and many where temp is in single digits or teens as the high mid-day. Also, can be cloudy many days during that time when not snowing and, because of northern location, you get only about 8 hours of daylight per day. March is highly variable, with many cold days, some snow, and then days it will get into the 50s and even 60s, and sometimes you get all those in the same day. April is generally cool but not frozen and you can sometimes get some days in the 70s and it often rains. May usually begins having above 60 temperatures almost daily and by mid-June you can have 80s and 90s (all Fahrenheit).

Everybody likes that first snowstorm with accumulation which can come as early as last half of November. Everybody wishes that they would never see snow again by that last storm in March. Worst time is when you return for second semester in mid-January and then through February and into early March when you can get many of those mornings where there are several inches (and sometimes a foot or more) of fresh snow on the ground, the temperature is zero, the wind is blowing at 25 miles an hour and you have a half mile walk to class, during which you feel like you are going to freeze to death and wonder why you were such an idiot to believe that you could actually survive a winter here.

drusba, I am really appreciated for your detailed reply.
I now get a clearer idea of Northern areas. Thanks!

I am from AZ, I don’t know cold. Where are you from, OP?

I’m from Chicago, where its burning humid in the summer and freezing in the winter. You will miss most of the brunt of winter since it’ll be during winter break, unless you’re from Chicago like me, then you experience all of it. LOL. But believe me, the first two snowstorms you’ll love since it’s your first time, but by the end of February/early March, you’ll be hating it. For about the first month, if you have no AC, you’ll want the windows open for air, but after that you’ll be comfortable until about Mid-late November when it’ll start getting cold, but soon by then before it gets real freezing, you’ll be home on break, then you’ll have to deal with 1.5 months of cold and snow before spring.

I’m afraid I will have to endure that freezing weather, maybe I have to stay in illinois the whole winter!
Oh, my Gosh~~

you will be fine. there is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing. Invest in wool and you will be toasty in the winter.

lol i’m probably goina have a horribile time with the weather haha. from singapore where it’s hot and humid all year round. (i’ll be doing IE too at UI keryar)
