Anyone else get "Bachelor of Arts-Music" acceptance from OCU?

Just wondering...d auditioned for Music Theater only (drats, why didn't she check of VP on the form too!) This week she got acceptance for Bachelor of Arts in Music. According to the FAQ's this means no dance classes...which will utterly kill her! But, they can audition again in freshman year for the MT program. Anyone had luck with this track? Seems like alot of $$ to spend and they can't even take dance classes for an entire year lol. D got acceptance so far from #3 and #4 schools... OCU was her #1. Still waiting for #2 decision... this is torture:)

Sorry, I was referring to Oklahoma City University

I thought that the OCU degree for MT was a Bachelor of Music degree?

MT is a BM at OCU. Unfortunately my d did not get accepted for MT/BM…She got accepted as a Bachelor of Arts in Music instead, with the opportunity to reaudition next year.

I do not know the likelihood of getting in the MT program upon re-auditioning. I am sure there have been instances where that has happened. So it is possible. But my advice would be to go somewhere that she is going to be happy with in the program she has been accepted for since there is no guarantee of admittance even if you re-audition. Will she be happy staying in the BA program if for some reason she doesn’t get in the MT program when she reauditions? If the answer is yes then OCU could be a great choice for her. If no. Then you may want to consider other options.

My D had a BA acceptance from OCU 3 years ago which she strongly considered. At that time there was an interesting option for outside dance classes offered right on campus. Not sure if this will work but I’ll try to plug in a link to the March 2011 discussion on the OCU subforum:

Or, here’s a link to the website of the dance program itself which does still appear to be current:

So Tikimom, I assume your d ended up going to a different school??? And thanks for the info:)

@futbrodmom - is your D by any chance a strong dancer? If so, she may want to audition for the dance performance major later this month. OCU dance majors do take some acting and voice as part of their curriculum. And they have an impressive number of alums working regionally, nationally and on Broadway. I know a few kids who have done this after not getting in MT and they are very happy as dance majors. Thought it might be an option to consider if you are unsure about the BA program.

@futbrodmom, yes my D did go elsewhere in the end. She received a BFA MT acceptance at Ball State, where she is very happy and is getting wonderful training. It has turned out to be a wonderful fit. She did love OCU, having attended the summer program, and she still keeps in close touch with friends who are students and alums from there.

I’ll second @vvnstar’s observation about the dance majors at OCU - my D knows several who have been quite successful in getting MT work.

My daughter auditioned at OCU for Music Theatre and didn’t get in. She did get accepted into the BA Music and the BFA Theatre depts. We didn’t know about that dance option…might have to look into that.

tikimom, so funny, my d was also accepted at Ball State! We have not yet visited, but plan to end of month. I had encouraged d to audition there, because I had researched and heard fantastic things about their program. Plus they are only 4 hours away, vs. 13 with OCU. Thanks so much fof the insight and fingers crossed, this is where she was meant to be!

On the OCU dance front, d was a strong dancer, but with senior year HS activities, auditions, shows etc. has not been to class since…last summer! She is afraid she won’t cut the mustard with all the others auditioning. Sigh:)
