My daughter was a NMF last year and never heard a peep from the GC or principal, except that she and the other five NMFs were given their certificates at the big senior awards night at the end of May, when there was something for everyone, like the award that most of the class got for having a weighted 3.0 GPA for at least one semester of high school. The NMF recognition was just one of many and definitely not one that any school official seemed to think was remotely special. In fact, it wasn't until I read this thread that I realized some schools do make a big fuss over it, so we never felt my D was neglected.

I just wanted to add that D contacted five of her RD schools via e-mail yesterday, saying that she had advanced to Finalist. She promptly received notification from three of them, thanking her for letting them know. They also said they would add it to her application file. I think it was worth doing.

LurkNessMonster, thank you for that information. I'll see that my son sends some e-mails.

Thanks, Lurkness--hopefully, my daughter will do the same tomorrow!

Thanks for the suggestion, everyone...S sent off some emails notifying some of his schools about Finalist status.

No mention of it from his HS yet either. I imagine he'll get the certificate sooner or later. I'm among those grateful that NM sends a letter to the student's home...otherwise we'd still be wondering.

Son sent a letter to his colleges about presidential scholar candidacy and NMF. GC didn't know they were 2 separate things (does now!). We haven't heard anything from HS or colleges, but have been snowed in for days, so maybe we will eventually. Our school's Midyear Report just went out last week, so I'm hoping his file is finally complete.

So here it is a year later and I am reviving for those who are getting anxious about this year’s National Merit Finalist. Btw, dd received 2 pieces of mail, one from UT and also University of Tulsa, I believe. UT said “dd would soon receive information regarding her finalist status” and to remember to put UT as her first choice if she wanted to get NMF money from them, and Univ of Tulsa gave the date for an invitation for National Merit Finalists to attend an info meeting. None said Congratulations for being named a finalist, but nearly as emphatic. What do you’ll think?

As long as all paperwork is completed & submitted by deadlines set forth & no major change has occurred with student (sudden drop to Cs, major violation of school rules, etc.), nearly all NMSFs become NMFs. Congrats for you & your child. Good job!
Starion

I know that she should become a finalist, but at the end the butterflies start. I will have 4 in college and a lot of financial help is riding on that designation.

ProudParent: DD also has received the postcard from Tulsa inviting her to the session for NM Finalists. Time will tell if it is, indeed, an early indicator of NMF standing. :-)

I also didn’t know about the 2000 SAT qualifying score.
Has anyone sent an SAT score taken 6 months prior to the PSAT as the SAT qualifying score they want to verify the PSAT? If so, what is that procedure?

The OU National Merit Rep told me that NMSC is looking for

1950 Total on the SAT and 1350 combined on Math/Critical Reading.

I don’t know how accurate her numbers were, but she sounded very professional.

I’ve got my fingers crossed!

“How do you find out what colleges give scholarships if student is NMF?”

One way is to check the websites of schools you’re interested in. For example,

[Office of Undergraduate Admissions - Scholarships](http://admissions.wpi.edu/Costs/scholarships.html)

Another is to contact them. I’m not aware that anyone has compiled a master list, and it wouldn’t surprise me to find that the schools and scholarship amount change year to year.

sorry if this has been asked already, but does the score of 2000 have to be single-sitting, or does NMSC consider super-scores?

Single sitting. NMSC does not super score.

FaithinHim, We actually visited OU last year, and LeeAnn Victory told us the same. Dd scored 2100 (1440M+V) and had a 4.5w/4.0uw. My daughter wants to go to OU, so we are on pins and needles to make sure she is a NMF. With 3 other children in college already, its a hugh deal. A&M has offered her alot of money but she wants to go out of state to OU. We live in Texas
