Anyone else play Minesweeper?

haha. love minesweeper!!

beginner - 5 seconds
medium - 37 seconds
expert - 139 seconds

WOOT :)

Interesting. Most the minesweeper geeks that I know who have better expert time than me have worse Intermediate times. I wonder if I’m one of those weirdo outliers.

Amongst our little group we follow a general rule of thumb - Somewhere around your intermediate time * 2 is good (or below). By the way, those are my best times on each mode. They are best times for a reason. Sometimes we get lucky. Most of the time, not quite.

If you look at the rankings, the better you get the larger the ratio. The best in the world are close to 4:1 expert to intermediate. An expert time of 60 should correspond to below 20. Obviously luck plays a role in it, but I can break 30 with a fair amount of regularity. Now part of that is because I play intermediate far more often than expert.

Not necessarily. I remember a person who could get under 20 in intermediate who could get under 40 on expert. That’s approximately 2:1, best times wise. His averages were closer to 4:1. Averages and best times are quite different. Luck plays too much of a role. For instance, on a lucky click, a person could clear 70% or more of the field.

My little group of friends and I, we don’t really consider averages – we are the type who click really fast, and mess up really fast. Our success rates are rather low, but the best times are often rewarding (somewhat).

I just downloaded Minesweeper on my iPod!

I have passed it exactly 0 times. lol I suck.

You remember a person? There are 9 people with recorded/validated sub-40 expert times in the entire world. None are American.

me me me me me me me me me me

I play minesweeper… = p.

Hmm. Let’s see. I never said that person was an American. Neither am I, for that matter.

Now, that person was a person whose records I found on youtube, not a person I met face to face. Does that qualify as a “validated” record? Not necessarily. The numbers were simply what he claimed as his records. If he falsified his records, then so be it.

Well if he was on youtube then I’m sure you could find his name.

I find it hard to believe that he cares enough to post his videos online but that he’s not in the world rankings.

I found that tough to believe as well, especially seeing that I can’t even find his videos anymore (I saw it a long time ago).

Some people choose not to. Was he one of those people or did he falsify his numbers? Now I’m beginning to lean towards maybe he wasn’t completely honest.

[Authoritative Minesweeper: Minesweeper World Ranking](<a href=“Authoritative Minesweeper: World Records and the Minesweeper Community”>Authoritative Minesweeper: Minesweeper Game World Ranking)

Those are the world rankings, btw. Most of the videos on youtube seem to be of Dion Tiu, who was #1 several years ago but seems to have stopped playing.

Interesting. Now I really am starting to think he was stretching the truth, because:

 1. he never revealed his name.
 2. if it was true he was really good at one but sucked at the other.

Meh. All I remember about my lucky solve in expert was I clicked a few times and I had 80% of the board cleared. Haven’t gotten that lucky ever since.

beginner - 0, first button i pressed
intermediate - 2, second button i pressed
expert - 97, after that amazing performance i never again had a desire to play minesweep, even though i probably spent 3-5 hours a week on it for like 6 months

Oh finally, 1 second Custom update.
