So has anyone ever applied for the Byrd Scholarship? and won.

nope, nobody on the entire planet has ever won it. they just keep offering it and laughing in our faces...

Really? That doesn't seem right.

byrd is for which school?

It's a federal scholarship.

BTW, this should be posted in the Financial Aid/Scholarhips section of CC.

My school nominates the senior with the highest weighted GPA and SAT/ACT score.

D has a Byrd in Washington State. I believe the criteria are different for each state.

A pool of money is given to each state. Each state determines how to doll out this money. In California, two students from each high school get it every year -- $1,500.00 per year (and renewable for 4 year if maintaining a 3.00 GPA). The selection criteria is based on GPA and SAT I score. Since this is a sure thing your high school normally nominates the top two students for this scholarship.

My daughter is a Byrd Scholar from Vermont - I believe that there are 2-4 from the state each year and they are chosen by a state wide committee. She is a sophomore at Vassar and they consider her Byrd Scholarship as part of her financial aid package.

Did anyone have to do a essay ?

For California...no essay...easiest scholarship for the top two students in each high school...

See nomination form, etc... http://www.csac.ca.gov/pubs/forms/grnt_frm/g-195.pdf

Hmm...when do they announce NJ?
