Anyone from NY/NJ going to the Open House on August 6?

My DD and DH are going--they think they're going to take the train, but if anyone wants to rideshare, please let us know. We're in Northern NJ. Thanks!

We're not from NJ/NY, but my DH and DD are also going. They are flying. DD is really looking forward to this.

I'll be there, but Im walking all of 20 feet. ;) Glad to hear people are looking forward to it, if you have questions before hand, feel free!

Tomboy,
Is Natick a decent (safe) place to stay overnight? Thansk.

We've stayed at a Courtyard in Natick/Framingham. . . all quite decent, safe, by a huge mall.

I like to stay at the conference center at Babson, but sometimes it's filled, and it's not the least expensive place around. But, if you're flying and won't have a car, the Babson spot is a short walk to Olin, and the breakfast included in the room cost is good.

The last time I took a cab from Logan to Olin, it was about $55. Sometimes there are reasonably priced shuttle vans.

Thanks ChrisD. I was planning to get them a cheap rental car from hotwire or priceline. That way they can do some exploring. Glad to hear Natick is fine. I was unable to get into the website for the Babson conference center. It seems to require a corporate ID or event ID and I didn't have one.

Hmm, I've had problems also w/ their website in the past, and have had to telephone for reservations. But if you're planning to rent a car, you don't really need the Babson location.

I am also a mother of pearl/perl! My daughter's name is Pearl.

My daughter is not really "Perl", she just uses that as a screenname sometimes because she likes the computer language Perl.
Thanks for all of the advise.
Do they usually get 100 women to attend this open house? My daughter describes Olin as "the most awesome college I've ever heard about" after reading the website and some articles we found on line!

I don't know how many people come to the August open house. . . I don't think they had that during the time my daughter was applying to schools. There are a few Olin students who post here, and they will probably answer your question.

She also thought Olin was "most awesome" from the literature she received, but she didn't visit campus till Candidates Weekend.

DH and I will be off in Pittsburgh for D#3's orientation/registration at Pitt for a couple of days. Where else is your daughter looking at for college?

She likes MIT, CalTech, Harvey Mudd. Safeties would be Case Western and our state U. You can see where her interests lie! Any suggestions of other schools we should look at? What other schools did your D consider aside from Olin?

chisd, funny story. Pearl hosted me when I did a second visit to olin.

Motherofpearl - I looked at a lot of those, also looked at Rice, it came down to Olin and Rice for me. Rice, since it has a non engineering side is a lot closer to 50/50 than most engineeing schools. RPI isnt bad either, we got a lot of our ideas from them (shh!) about project based learning. I cant think of other ones I looked at sorry!

I'm glad you like RPI. DD likes it, too!

My daughter applied to RPI, CMU, and Ohio State as well as Olin. RPI--looked like a great education, the town it's in looked....well like it's seen better days. CMU--she liked the Oakland area, the quality of education, but not a good personality fit. OSU--where else could you get a good engineering education and be in a great marching band?

That's similar to my DD's list at the moment--definitely CMU and RPI, not Ohio State; it's probably too far away for her.
