I wouldn’t sweat the Likely Letters too much–local kid just got a letter (in the newspaper signing letter of intent) Recruited Athlete–Football–posted his stats in paper–GPA3.7/ACT:26

I think I just lost a little respect for D

I think I just lost a little respect for D

Yes, I got one too! So excited. For the record, white male 2300 SAT. Unfortunately, I won’t be heading to D in the fall but congratulations to everyone!

Received one! Asian female from Ohio, 36 ACT, okay ECs. Honestly was blown away when I got one; I applied on the last day because there were no additional essays.

Congrats to all recipients! I have to say their likely letter is working-- I’m a lot more okay with going to Dartmouth than I was a month ago.

jtand5, ACT 26??? Ye gods.

Yeah I couldn’t believe it when I read it either—don’t get me wrong I congratulate all that have gotten likely letters and some of the stats are amazing and the letters well deserved I am sure—I also get the recruited athlete set asides—but I have to be honest after seeing all the amazing stats for those rejected or deferred (my D is one–still hoping to get in RD and still loves Dartmouth)–this left a little bad taste in my mouth–again congrats to those who made it.

jtand5 - Unfortunately, that’s just the ways things work in college admissions. I think being a recruited athlete trumps everything else. My DD was denied admission to an elite school, but a recruited athlete (who is also a URM) from our area with an ACT score 10 points lower than hers was admitted. Still hoping for good news from Dartmouth. :)

do these things get sent out in waves?
ahh now i’m scared that i’m going to get rejected since i applied in early november…

This is the problem about any discussion of Likely Letters. People start freaking out about not receiving them.

acha: going in, you knew that no one’s chances are good for getting an admit. Your worrying about a likely letter won’t change this fact. You may be a recipient of a LL. You may not get a LL and still accepted. You may get rejected. None of this is in your control so why expend a half second of worry to it?

Just got an academic likely letter in the mail! So excited! Echoing what others have said, it was completely unexpected, and it made my day. And yea, T26E4, I definitely agree ^.

I can see why colleges use these as a way to attract otherwise undecided applicants.

I got a likely letter today in the mail. im a white male from ny without any crazy hooks. just high test scores and grades. really made my day… and i have an interview this afternoon at 3. takes a load off the interview doesnt it!

Just got one!!!

Just got one today, declined to interview which is kind of strange.

I just got a likely letter! My letter was sent a few hours before my interview, lol. So I guess that didn’t count for anything, but my interviewer was really great and she really got me excited about the school :)

S got Likely letter today (NY) …midyear grades haven’t gone out yet and just had interview a couple of days ago (went well but not enough time for it to have impacted his admit decision)…not a URM or alum kid…he is psyched…and can now relax a bit… congrats to all who got letters too…it takes the stress out of decision day!

I just got one! It feels great knowing that I don’t have to worry come the deadline!
