does anyone know anybody who got a likely letter, and then got rejected??? Or is a likely a practically official acceptance?

I think there's some statistic out there that says that two people who got likelies ultimately got rejected, but that's probably due to failing grades second semester.

i dont think you can get rejected after getting a likely letter, because in my likely letter it said:
"There is no question that when we mail our final decisions at the end of March, you will be offered admission to the College.

I see no reason to delay letting you know about the status of your application, and I hope this early indication will "ease your mind" a bit."

Yeah, that's the version of the likely letter I got too, jerseygirl, but apparently, the "there is no question" part is only for the first wave of likely letters. As far as I know, the second and third waves say that admission is "very likely", which is why I presume it's possible to get rejected. Plus, if you search on TheDartmouth.com, it mentions those two who ultimately got rejected.

Actually, I got a likely letter in the second wave, and mine said "there is no question..." I wonder why there's two versions.

Here is a thread from last year that had the 2 versions of likelies. The OP posted on the 8th, before the 3rd wave comes out, so the letters have to be mixed and matched.

Perspective from a parent visiting this board after many months:
Last year my daughter didn't receive a likely letter from Dartmouth. However, she was accepted there, as well as Yale, Princeton, and Columbia. It's nice to get a likely, but no cause for alarm if you don't.

I was just wondering if all the students who received likely letters were candidates applying for financial aid. I noticed that many of you mentioned the financial package that followed the initial likely letter. I did not apply for financial aid, and I just noted that one difference today.

I applied for financial aid, got a likely letter, but haven't received the financial package yet (my financial aid info wasn't complete until a week and a bit ago, which was after I got my likely letter).

I agree with ccobserver that there is no need for alarm. Keep in mind the overwhelming majority of students admitted to Dartmouth will not receive likley letters.

I didn't apply for financial aid.

i'm curious about dimensions. i got a likely letter in the first wave (it came the day after valentine's day :)) but there was no brochure about dimensions in it. i live about 1 hour from dartmouth, and i absolutely love it so i'd definitely go to dimensions...can you sign up now, or do you have to wait until after you've been officially accepted??

^^^^ You can not sign up now. You have to send your RSVP after you get the official admission letter. I have already checked with them. Apparently, this whole thing has been done to keep us interested and motivated which is really working for me, I must say !
