I received a likely letter from Dartmouth today, having no major hooks-just solid grades and test scores (1540 and 3x800's SAT II's as of the time they made the decision.) I must say I'm quite happy right now, having to not be a nervous wreck throughout the following two months, but being able to count on attending a college where I'll be truly happy. I hope that others on this board will have their luck turn for them either this February, or when the April decisions come in. Note-I was deferred from Princeton Early Decision, so I'm not sure why I've suddenly become so wanted! Best of luck to everyone in this irrational, flawed admissions process. I live in Northern New England, by the way, and the letter was mailed on February the 11th.

Text of the letter:

Dear ______

Greetings from Dartmouth. I hope your senior year is going well and that you are enjoying your courses and activities.

My purpose in writing is very simple--we have reviewed your application and think you are an outstanding prospect for Dartmouth. I recently read your folder and was exceedingly impressed with your academic accomplishments and intellectual potential. There is no question that when we mail our final decisions in April, you will be offered admission to the college.

I see no reason to delay letting you know about the status of your application, and I hope this early indication will "ease your mind" a bit. The college admissions process is unnecessarily long and anxious for many students. So, relax, get back to that book you meant to read, and use this time to reflect on your plans and goals for the next phase of your education.

If you have any questions about Dartmouth, please let me know. In the meantime, best wishes for the remainder of your high school career.

Sincerely,

Karl M. Furstenberg
Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid

You will not beleive I just got back from lunch and the very topic of likely letters had just crossed my mind (I won't disclose the person I was thinking about in hopes that they would recieve one)

Lucky,

welcome to the board....

How great is this to get a love note from Dartmouth on Love day. I am sooo happy for you. Congratualtions to you and I hope that you have a wonderful time at dimensions. :) ;) :p :D  (am I smiling enough for you?? but really my heart is jumping up and down for you)

For those that don't get one today, tommorrow or ever, please don't panic because they go out in no specific order between now and april. Hoping ot see more good news come.

Thank you all! :) By the way, will Dartmouth be holding a weekend for prospectives this spring, and if so, when? I'm really looking forward to traveling to campus!

Yes they hold a session for prospective students, sometime around April 21. Dimensions runs for 4 days (Thursday thru Sunday) Did you get that information in your likely letter? If not, it is coming.

Congrats to all of those who received likely letters and to some of the new faces , welcome to CC.

Dimensions of Dartmouth is the schools 4 day program for admitted students (unfortunately ED students are not invited to dimensions, but that does not mean that they are not welcomed should they choose to come(they will just be responsible for getting themselves to Hanover ,asking a friend to house them and purchasing their own food. But there is going to be so much free food over those 4 dyas that it should be a non issue). It is held in april approx April 21 thru 24 (thursday thru sunday). You will have the opportunity to attend classes, wander the campus, speak with advisors and attend a variety of seminars, parties, concerts etc.

For students that live in the tri-sate area (NYC, NJ, CT) there is a bus that leaves from Penn Station on thursday morning and returns you back on Sunday afternoon. the cost is approx $70 round trip. As you get closer to april you should be receiving information on dimensions.

Gypsy, see above link.

Here is an article about Dimensions for the 08's

I'll definitely go to the dimensions thing, although i'm not precisely sure what it is. Question: Could mid-year reports really affect your status if you got a likely letter? Since my second mp was rather bad and I went down in basically everything. I didn't do terribly though and i've definitely had worse mp's so I'm thinking that maybe it won't affect it?

They are not all coming out today so if you do not get a likley don't panic, there are going to be letters mailed out through out the months of february and march. It all happens randomly, remember the school has not gone through all of the applications yet, mid year reports are still coming in and interviews are still being done. If you don't get a likely letter it does not mean that you haven't been accepted because they do not send out a lot of likely letters.

don't give up hope guys! i wasnt expecting it at all either. And remember that a vast majority of people are not admitted through these likely letters
