Gluten- I hope the job thing works out. YaY!! MICA!!! they will be good to her. I have a friend who teaches liberal arts there, and he has always described the kids as the worlds biggest sweethearts. We loved MICA!!!

Green- see above, and both your Ds are going to a really fine institution. My S was so in love, we know some great kids there.

Drae- about the not much love for RISD- we loved RISD, my son was very impressed, its just that he also loved MICA, and we were not in the running for any kind of aid from RISD. Congratulations, and it will be great.

FAM- of course CMU- it is absolutely the right choice. He will thrive, and grow. He will find geeky engineers to stay up all night watching weird solar phenomena with, and build odd mechanical/art machines with. We have a friend in that program, and they definitely celebrate engineering at that school. And I mean celebrate joyously…

To all, parents of men and women. Whether you have a conversation about it or not, whether your kids are shy about going into pharmacy and buying what they need or not, send them to school with a box of condoms, no questions asked.

Congrats to all on final decisions. I know it has been a hard road for some - so many good choices, so many factors to weigh.

B&D, I would love for my D to meet your S at MCAD! We could have a noodle lunch on Eat Street!

Looking forward to the “what to send with your kid” thread. MCAD has a great list and will share once the thread gets started. I think it’s only available on the admitted students page, so I will watch and add what other might not have thought about. One thing they mentioned was 6 billion sweaters! D only has 3 - and those we just bought on the markdown rack because its 88 degrees here now, so I see the local Target getting business from her long about September!

Hey all
I think it is better to clarify that my kid is still in HS comes fall for another year.
he loved MCAD and OK with midwest, there is definite possibility he might ends up there in few years. He ate some Vietnamese / Thai fusion noodle and liked it.
I think he will do Cooper till either he gets in or get sick of it, do other stuff on side since we learned that traditional academic college is not his thing by going to this HS that mimics college courses in style and rigor but with warm fuzzy support system that come with small selective HS, like everyone knows who your kid is and itching to help.
If he can’t do it now, I don’t know how he would write papers, do research and take care of other businesses on his own.
Or like those girls mentioned in other thread, going to college away from home and be on his own force independence? I can not count on that just yet, he needs to grow up a bit before making that plunge. Some boys are usually 2-4 years behind of girls mentally, or something like that I think mine is on 4 year’s mark.

Congrats G and G. MICA should give you the collection cans saying " help my kid afford fabulous MICA education" instead of tote bag.

I had this book fantasy (always) after 10-20 years of time, some become critic, some practicing artist, designer, educator, tech-art, some won this grants or awards and what about all these successful bunch that was spread all over the place in UG have in common, then Malcolm Gladwell sorta parson would track down to what happened in squee thread and find out about all these dedicated half nuts kids / parents and write a book about it, which would sell millions forever and ever and its profit goes to this scholarship fund that could be used by anyone regardless of income or asset but need-need in each unique situations.
keep it up !!

Thanks Bears, and I like your book fantasy very much. Then we’ll all need a few less collection cans.

Congratulations redbug, and remember - polar fleece or wool! It’s the only way to keep warm. When our power was out for a few days after snowstorm #1, I was very thankful for my wool knee socks (from Marshall’s). When we got really cold, we’d go out and do a burst of snow shoveling. That heats you up pretty well too!

B&D, yes I thought your S was a junior. He and D can get together next year, she’ll show him the ropes. Can’t do wool, makes her itch, but so far we do have 2 hats, 3 pairs of mittens, and 3 coats, ranging from warm to below zero for days and days warm. Best deal was a GAP brand down jacket from Goodwill, brand new, except for a coffee stain on it for $10. Washed it and now looks new again. Wish I would have found that before I spent $180 on the other 2 coats! But for that price, couldn’t pass it up. She’s looking forward to the cold believe it or not - she hates heat.

D just got an email telling her that SAIC “has limited space and merit scholarships still available for the Fall 2010 semester”. She had test scores and transcripts sent there and did a port review but did not apply. Today I was listening to NPR talk about those students that are waitlisted and are now in limbo. Said schools need that waitlist so they don’t run out of students in case not all accepted decide to attend. Makes me think SAIC doesn’t waitlist? I know a girl who is waitlisted for Pratt and that’s the only place she applied. Anyone here waitlisted for SAIC? Was surprised to hear they still had merit $$ available.

Maybe their merit money is money they had promised to students who they now know are not attending. It’s been freed up. Hopefully, some waitlisted student, or accepted student who needs more $$$ will get it.

With regard to the merit aid – we sent our paperwork to MICA yesterday. When I got the mail, there were letters from Parsons and Purchase offering more $$ in merit scholarships. She was offered $5k more from Parsons and $1250 more from Purchase. So they must have gotten some letters from their top choice students declining admission and roll the money over to other students that they hope to still entice to their school. Since they haven’t heard from us about final decision yet, they’re offering more money. I’ll keep this in mind when my other two kids reach college decision age. If we end up getting more from RISD I might get slightly upset. But kid seems happy with MICA choice.

Wondering what today’s mail will bring, hehe…

Drumroll please… we just got Pratt’s financial aid offer in today’s mail. This is after D sent in her rejection letter.

It didn’t add anything great to the merit $$$ offer (which was generous enough) and wouldn’t have changed her decision, but I wonder if they’ve lost a few students by being so late with these details. Fair warning for next year’s applicants!

Does anyone care to do a recap so we can all see who is going where? Been trying to follow it, but hard when I’m supposed to be working! Might be helpful to future classes to see what the seniors of 2010 have chosen. I’ll start with my screen name and D’s choice:
