friend of mine’s kid goes and works at some SUNY. job is to initially separate mountains of apps by SAT scores alone in three groups, in, out, maybe out ( note: not maybe “in” )
I am sure someone is overseeing what the kid is doing or self is overseeing what machine is doing which oversaw by someone or some other machinery.
Scary.
when I visited Bard, it was a notification time for some early groups and big envelopes and small ones are very casually left in the crates on the floor. I don’t know what those letters are for sure-sure but anyone can walk in and pocket one to blow nose or make airplane.
I am glad I heard all these now, I will be ready when I have to, then maybe never even have to, there is a good chance we won’t do “college” anymore.

digmedia told us how to find old thread but for those tech challenged, this thread should kept in view. I am bumping.

Well we got our invoice from MICA the other day. Lovely.
I’ve been trying to get the kid to get the student loan stuff taken care of (time is getting short) and for the last three days the government website (thank you Obama and Dems for taking over the student loan business so we don’t have any other options) has had “emergency outtage” and we are getting absolutely no where. Has anybody else been having trouble?

Gmom
I know it is a wrong thing to say at the moment
but
thank you for bumping and saving the thread !!!

You’re welcome, Bears! I love this thread!

We got our bill from MCAD and they had our student loan minused out, so I’m assuming we’re all set. We had to have all out stuff done by July 1, including the promissory note and student loan “counseling” form that FAFSA suggested the student do, and not the parent so the student would know their responsibilities for payback, etc. We were out of town the last 2 weeks in June, so it was a last minute deal. I ended up doing it because I knew she’d have no time. You had to read all the info, then answer multiple choice questions to show you understood. When I was done I printed it out and and told her 'here’s how it works", without all the government speak.

keep going, folks.
this is great now we all know “getting in” is only the beginning, real fun starts in July…

For more squee - D was given advanced placement at MICA for drawing and painting. She gets to jump up a class, and even better, starts off with 6 credits for placing out!

In case anyone wants the nuts and bolts… they ask admitted students if they want to place out of beginning painting, drawing, and computer design of some sort class. You have to fill out a short form for each, and submit a portfolio for each (on line). After the whole application process, it’s pretty straightforward and easy. D decided not to try to place out of the computer class because even though she’s pretty facile with Photoshop, she’s never had any formal instruction. You don’t need any AP classes to be eligible to get the credits.

We got the tuition bill too but since it’s not due until August 2nd, I’m planning on ignoring it for another week. The housing situation is not definite yet, so that part of the tuition bill is estimated.

I can’t help but lurking! awww good olden days…
G
congrats! would that save one semester tuition or not that much?
^ I thought all freshmen live in commons? or you mean double or single suite make price deference?
If you could choose, meyerhoff or gateway costs more? I know meyerhoff’s hot water supply was an issue.
I took nap on the commons’ single bed when I dropped off the kid for pre college. mattress was OK but room decor and the view from the window was bit dingy (roomy though, with nice kitchen, sofa in living room)
I have yet to see nicer dorm room or thicker mattress than Berklee music.
Anyone?

Most freshman are in Commons, some are in Meyerhoff. I don’t know if there’s a price difference, but some in Commons end up in a single inside a suite and that is definitely more. D wants to be in Commons since she loved it there during the summer program and they do have full kitchens which is unusual. I wonder how many art supplies will be stored in the cabinets?

I’m not sure if the credits save us money. Only if D decides to try to graduate early, which I doubt. It will give her some breathing room if she needs to take a lighter load one semester. She also has 3 more credits from the old summer program.

It would have been nice to know about the date. I found the MICA info on student loans quite vague. Despite much dual-parent prodding, the kid just never could “find the time” to take care of the student loan stuff. If it’s really too late for her, then she will find herself taking that gap year anyway.
I just told my husband if I was still home and not working now, this would never have happened. Of course, if I wasn’t working, we couldn’t afford for her to go to MICA anyway.

So it goes. While I do have some money from my mother’s estate and we could cover the $5500, I’m not particularly inclined to do that since we’re already having to come up with $22k. She has to have some “skin in the game”. Trouble is it’s hard to figure how much to hold the ADD girl’s feet to the fire. But life is rough and even if you have ADD, you still have to grow up and deal with your mistakes.

If we’re really lucky, she might make it to her road test and get her driver’s license next week – that was another of the conditions for letting her go to MICA. She hasn’t gotten a job though and refuses to take the bus anywhere. She won’t use her bike or her own two feet to get a job. So I keep telling her good luck with spending money.

Some kids need bigger kicks out of the nest than others, I guess. I’m not one of those fortunate parents whose kids manage to fledge on their own.

Glutenmom, I’m sorry to hear about your troubles motivating your daughter. Our D going to MICA is pretty responsible, but our youngest is quite the opposite. She’s only 15 now but I’m worried in advance about how well/badly she’ll do with all the college responsibilities. She seems passionate about nothing except being a couch potato or going shopping. Ugh!

For the driving test, our older D’s dragged the trash cans into the street to use as markers for practicing parallel parking. They both passed the first time even though one of them had to “re-park” during the test. Nerve wracking!

Well today kiddo reported that she had completed the student loan process. What a relief! She had to contact FAFSA to straighten out some glitch with her PIN, but now (supposedly) all is well. I’m relieved to see that at least that is straightened out.

We went to the Container Store to pick up items for the dorm. The kid had received a gift card for her graduation. Of course we ended up spending way more than the gift card. I was so excited to find a collapsible rolling shelf (it folds completely flat) that she can use for her gluten free food/utensils. I have my doubts about how much she will actually cook. We got the lowest meal plan available… I think it works out to one meal a day and we’ll see what they’ll have for her that she will actually be able to eat. Even so I feel like I’m paying for double food by having to supply her with all the gluten free food she’s gonna need. We also got some underbed chests and various hooks and hangers and so forth. After that spending spree she’s going to have to be content with scrounging stuff from home. We’re waiting to see what the microwave situation will be.

Anyway, at least there’s some movement in the right direction.

Glad to hear everyone is making progress towards this fall.

Me : My entire life is in boxes!! Packing a two bedroom rented house to move to a 2 bedroom apartment in Roscoe Village, Chicago, for SAIC. Moving truck is booked, and my girlfriend, myself, and our dog will be departing Vermont in two weeks (the 31st).

Still waiting to hear back in a small private loan to finance the last 3k or so due on my fall tuition, and to see whether or not SAIC will cover my financially for the laptop program.

Unfortunately, they wont certify my Macbook Pro (too old, even though its a workhorse and can crunch any video I throw at it) so I need to find $2200 for the laptop program, or I wont receive any of the free software used for classes if I continue to use my own laptop. Considering we just spent 2300 on an apartment (first / security / dog fees) and another 900 on a moving truck, our accounts aren’t exactly flush with money.

Other than that (not complaining! everything is working out relatively well, and we will be in Chicago in about 17 days.

P.S - I feel for all the parents packing your kids. Moving is completely insane. Carefully packing numerous boxes, just to rip them all open and throw them out weeks later. After this move, I might not be able to physically walk to school the 1st day haha

you should have supported WNYC ( no $ pledge needed to enter) and signed up for the Apple Tekserve MacbookPro raffle
I am big on winning something this way because everyone around but myself keep wining- Greencard ( I don’t need that anymore) dirt cheap apartment in brand-new hi-rise quota (need badly), lottery entrance to popular public kindergarten,(needed 13 years ago) jar of cookies,(always good) whole watermelon(will be nice these heatwavin’ days), etc etc
The radio station does fundraising every season with Macbook each but, guess it’s too late… and you’d be need pod-casting once you are in Chicago (or even from VT? listeners’ calls do come in, thou, from all over the place)

Good to hear from you, good luck and keep us posted.

Go for it, bacon!

God…what a deal! I would have been all over this before husband, children, job! What fun to live in a science museum for a month…I remember some childhood book about a little girl who hides in the library and lives there…am I making this up?..very vague memory help me if you know the book

about raffles and competitions for gadgets .actually, there are lots of these little and some not so little chances to win things…can you believe our orthodontist is raffling off an I-pad this summer if the kids check in during the summer break (checkups are included in the massively expensive treatment package)? You know she is charging way! too much for straightening my kids’ teeth if an IPAD is just raffled off willy-nilly this august! Also, lots of offers for gadgets if son tells VCU, Wisconsin, etc. why he turned them down…they have these surveys they really want the kids to fill out about admissions and then they offer them a chance to win an ipod or something. CMU chief of cheap offered the chance for a free hoodie if student completed a survey of the admission experience. You would think $50K/year would get you a damn hoodie without having to fill out a survey…but I digress! I see offers all the time to win stuff if I fill in a survey, enter in my purchase number (Target has these) online, etc. Why not? good luck to all the new students and may they win useful and useless stuff through these competitions!

fammom
this is rather well known classic and I don’t think you meant this, but just in case.
the kids (girl boy sibs) would buy food at automat and hid in Met museum of art. I had to look up what automat was, naturally.
then in the East Village near Cooper automat appeared with bells n’ whistles. and it was like coolest thing for my kid to buy Saturday lunch. A corndog for 3 bucks tokens or something, what !?

“You would think $50K/year would get you a damn hoodie without having to fill out a survey…”
No kidding…
This seems kind of hmmmmm tacky perhaps…

hey smarty are you pulling allnighter? me too
