Anyone go to the Echols Day on April 7? If yes, how was it? I couldnt go, but i will go on the 21st.

If you haven't visited the college yet, GO! It will be well worth it. The Dean of Admissions, John Blackburn gave a speech and Parke Muth also gave a speech, along with an Echols Scholar and a Rodman Scholar. My s attended a class, they served lunch and provided student music groups during this lunch hour. But, the greatest thing was there were MANY students there to answer questions.

We also took the tour AGAIN. I guess we never tire of it. It truly is the most beautiful campus I've ever seen.

It was a muggy morning but it got prettier as the day wore on. The place looked fantastic by early afternoon. Go soon to see a lot of trees in bloom. The class I sat in didn't blow me away but I felt comfortable in it. I enjoyed my tour; the guide was funny and charismatic. The speeches consisted of a lot of congratulations and much of what you can already learn from the website but it was still worthwhile because of added humor. The student discussion didn't seem exactly for me because I'm interested in science and the students mostly had majors such as Econ and Political science. It was good overall except I wished there were fewer parents and I got to meet more people my age.

how was the day structured? mostly tour/info? anything i could get out of it that wasnt covered at a standard summer tour of the campus?

If you didn't go you didnt miss much. The speakers there just praised all the students and tried to sway all of them to come to uva. My friends and I walked around campus, got a feel for where everything was. It was an ok trip, learned a little bit, but not essential at all.

I think the advantage that you have over a summer tour is a campus in full swing, and many current students there to answer questions (we were told there was a tour of the dorms, but we didn't go). The day included: speeches by the Admissions directors, student speeches, and a room full of exhibits for your parents to go and ask plenty of questions about security, housing, etc.

There was q & a period, and also time for sitting in on one class.

hmm sitting in on a class...now that seems intriguing the rest i could probably find out from the site or via mailings

i dunno...im sleeping overnight through the monroe society...ive never visited before and everyone says a visit is a MUST.

monroe society? wats that...id like to stay overnight that sounds awesome

Visit that site. Call them or email them with what date you want to visit. I am sleeping over on the night of the 20th.

Hey I'm Joe, and I registered one of you guys on that morning! I recommend that if do you come for the Days of the Lawn, sit in one of the classes because that way, you will get a feel of the classes here. So yeah, any questions just ask me.

I had such a great time at the Echols Lawn day. Sitting in on John Sullivan's "Mass Media American Culture" class proved to be the fastest 50 minutes of my life (and a tremendous experience overall), the campus was beautiful (once it finally cleared up) and everyone was so accomodating.

Plus, I got to talk with Coach Bernardino (swimming) for over an hour, so that was a nice change of pace from the laaaame 20 minutes at FSU. Bernardino looks like Steve Carell from the side, too.

I can't wait!

bklyn2cornell and other visitors, i'm howie, a first year. if you guys have any question/want me to show you what the inside of brown college is like/want to get drunk and have a good time when you visit, don't be shy. PM me here or aim me at yipuxia.

lol, because getting drunk with random HSers you don't know isn't sketchy at all ;)
