I'm a second year student hoping to major in econ. But I'm seriously worried about my GPA :(
I got a B in math 1B and I'm taking stat 21 and econ 1 right now. Both of those classes have a horrible curve and I've been getting below average scores. What's my chance of getting into econ if I end up with a GPA below 3.0?

I heard that they just say the average is 3.4 but they usually accept people under 3.0 if you have nowhere else to go. I just heard though; I’m a 2nd year as well so I don’t know for sure.

I’ve heard you’re very likely to get accepted with a 3.0 or above. Under 3.0 you can improve your chances by writing the optional essay in the application.

what do you guys think I should write about in the essay? Lol I can’t really tell them that I did bad because stat and econ have a killer curve

Hmm, if you think about it… everyone in econ had to take those classes… they’ll be the same people in your upper divs. Are you sure you want to major in those classes?

But then again, I found upper div econ easier than lower divs :)

I don’t think they accept many people with under a 3.0. Writing an essay will help the borderline people(aka, around 3.0), but I think unless you have an extraordinary circumstance, they won’t.

The average is a 3.4, meaning if you get below a 3.4, then you need to write an essay. They don’t always accept everyone above a 3.0 even.

Go to 5th floor evans to talk to the advisor. If you don’t feel comfortable with that, they have a peer ad tabling there sometimes. Ask them about what you can do.

You can always do a back-up major like political economy or environmental economics, though I heard the latter will be capped… sometime.

No, 3.4 is just the average. To satisfy the GPA requirement for the capped major, you need a 3.0. Get a 3.0 and you’re in, no questions asked.

To the OP, if you can manage to get a B in both, you should be ok. Just try and do better from here on out. You also have Econ 100A/100B to help boost up your GPA. Buckle down and get it done. I was in the same situation about a year ago and busted my balls to get in.

Thanks for the replies guys.
RaNe, thank you for sharing your personal experience. It’s nice to know that other people had to go through this too.
Any suggestions on how I can improve my grade in Stat and Econ? And for econ, what’s the usual cutoff for a B?

you are guaranteed in with a 3.0, although some ppl with a 2.9+ get admitted.
