I'm planning on applying to Berkeley as an Econ. major. What should I be doing right now to increase my chances of being accepted? I currently have a year-long internship at NASA, but I am an administrative assistant and it doesn't have much to do with Economics. I also work at a fast-food place, that shouldn't really help me at all. I plan on joining the honors program. Should I be doing community service? Student government? Thanks for the input.

Don't worry about ECs. Cal admits mostly on the basis of your grades and completion of IGETC and major prereqs.

Really? That's good to hear. What about UCLA? How could I prepare myself for UCLA? And what could I write about for the UC prompt:

"What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had in the field such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities and what you have gained from your involvement."

Good grades from ccc + good essays = sufficient to get you into UC. UCLA takes almost everyone with 3.8+.

l84ad8:

That's not true. I know 2 people with 4.0 didn't get into Berkley. and I knew this one guy who had a 2.8GPA got into Berkley.

Berkley does read personal statements. Why do you think they got a reputation of having "unique" people?!

From an admissions counselor:

Cal wants diversity, UCLA wants stats. She said I could definitely get into UCLA as a Math/Econ major with a 3.7, but that even with a 4.0 no one is guaranteed at Berkeley.
