Anyone Live in Ohio State's Engineering Dorm--Haverfield?

My son is starting as an Ohio State freshman in Fall of 2015 in the College of Engineering. My instinct is to push him to live in the Engineering dorm since I would presume he would have a better chance to succeed in a tough major if he is surrounded by other engineering students–where they can study together. Does anyone live in OSU’s engineering dorm–or know someone who does? If so, what is your opinion.

It is definitely a good idea for him to live in the engineering dorm…my son is in his third year and was in the engineering dorm freshman year where he made his best friends and they now live in a house and still study and have fun together. It is a real benefit and will help him to stay on track.

buckeyetom–Thanks for your reply. Nice to hear from someone whose son has been through this. The “living learning dorm concept” does sound very beneficial academically. Assuming my son ends up going to OSU (which is very likely), I will urge him to live in the Engineering Dorm. Just seems like a practical choice. Thanks again. GO BUCKS!!

My daughter lives in Haverfield. We were just there today, dropping her off for the start of the new semester.
She is a Mount Scholar and this program is housed at Haverfield. I didn’t know engineers were there as well.
I think it makes sense for your son to room with other engineers, but there is a mix of students in the dorm. My daughter is on a floor with girls only, the boys are on another floor. (My daughter is a microbiology/genetics major.)

The dorm rooms themselves are standard, somewhat dated but clean and adequate. It is a 4 story dorm, not huge, and on north campus. Good location for classes and close to high street. The dorm is quiet, does not seem to be a big party dorm, but is social. My daughter and her roommates go up to one of the male floors to watch football games, one of the boys has a big screen TV. When OSU won an important game before the break, they all went to the hallways and sang Carmen, etc.

My opinion is that Haverfield would be the best of all worlds for your son. He would have the engineering group to study and bond with, but also a mix of other majors and scholar programs. The dorm is a mix of male and female and seems to be a nice group of young people. Polite, well mannered, help each other and have fun, etc.

Must be the engineers who are always helping the girls in the dorm. The girls love to decorate and redecorate their rooms. Re-loft the bunk beds, move the wardrobes and desks, put up lamps, twinkle lights, curtains, ceiling fabric. The boys from upstairs help them with this :).

Osumom2018–thank you so much for the details on Haverfield. I’m glad your daughter likes it. I’m also glad to hear there’s a mix of majors in the dorm. Sounds both convenient and practical. Go Bucks!! Beat Oregon!!

Yes my daughter is very happy at Haverfield. It is convenient, practical and a nice group of kids.

It will make for a good freshman experience.

Pluck the ducks.
Go Bucks
O-H-I-O

FYI, the engineering dorm this year is Houck House. It will be closed down next year for renovations which is why engineering students will be in Haverfield. Personally, a dorm for engineering students was a huge selling point for me. Many pluses-peers to study with, so close to most of their courses…

@pbrain-- thanks for the reply. I (just as a mom) thought the engineering dorm idea sounded like a great idea.

So now the old “engineering dorm” (houck) is being renovated–meaning those engineering students would move back(from haver field) to newly a renovated dorm–houck–later? 2015 or 2016??

My daughter who lives in Haverfield now has been told that her scholar’s program is moving out of Haverfield next year and moving into one of the new dorms being built on Lane.

That’s great. I’ve seen pics or renderings on osu’s website and the new friend look great.

The kids are all very excited about moving to the new dorm. It is going to be located on High and Lane and is part of the new complex that is supposed to become an ionic part of the campus.

When my oldest daughter was in her second year, she was housed in the Lane Avenue Residence Hall. It was an old Hilton. There were many engineers there as well. She is studying biochem. This dorm was pretty roomy, with only 2 kids per room and a private bathroom. Being an old hotel you can imagine the size of the rooms. She loved it there.

My younger daughter is about ready to pay the acceptance fee to OSU and will be studying engineering this fall. She is shooting for Morrill or Lincoln Tower. My oldest is in Morrill now and my youngest loves the layout. My oldest was in Scott House her first year (Scott House is no longer there) and my youngest hates the idea of being squished in a dorm with 3 other girls. She may end up in Haverfield but we are shooting for the Towers or Lane Ave. Hall right now.

I do like the idea of her being with other engineers so I hope I can kind of talk her into considering one of the engineer dorms. I think I will lose that battle though.
