Linguistics and Foreign Language Majors

Where are you from, where are you transferring (or hoping to transfer), and perhaps most importantly, what language(s) do you study?

I'm double-majoring in German and either Anthro or Linguistics, depending on where I transfer to. I got into UCI, UCR, UCSD, UCSB, UCSC, and UCD, but I'm holding out for UCLA and UCB.

If minors count, I would love to be a French minor.

Majoring in Anthropology concentration Archaeology thinking about doubling in something closely related and helpful to my major.

I would love to minor in French b/c it is a language spoken in Africa and many other parts of the world.

I got into UCSD at ERC and UCSB waiting to hear from UCLA and Berkeley.
Target school: UCLA

semantics is interesting to me, but i doubt i would be able to stick with it for long… im more interseted in cultural linguistics :P

i heard long time ago that French was a dying langauge, lol not sure how true it is now!

French is a dying language, but so are many other languages. Hopefully in the future, there are significantly fewer languages so we can communicate better.

I am putting my money on English as a surviving language…or maybe Chinese.

well, i think if more languages are dying, it wouldnt do any good to any langauges that are going to live! and as the language dies, the culture that goes with it would probably be affected too!! that would suck! >.<

Nope French is not a dying language, in fact the Francophone is alive and thriving.

French unifies and gives the continent of Africa a common language in which it can communicate through out (almost)the whole continent.

I am currently fluent in Spanish studying French, Italian and plan to add several more languages.

out of all the languages Spanish and French are definitely not dead.

It will die in the end. And the proportion of people who speak French has declined.

do you guys know anyone who acutally were/are majoring in Linguistics in CAL/UCLA??
what are their stats like, if u know?
i know i can find stats on UC website, but im more interested in what else they did to get accepted apart from gpa…

Yay, peers! I graduated from the Defense Language Institute’s Spanish program. It’s basically a 9-5 Spanish submersion for 6 months. Pretty sweet deal and it’s in beautiful Monterey.

@ Mshaddal I agree that semantics is particularly interesting.

I’ve applied as an English major and alternatively Linguistics. I plan on pursuing law and my ultimate goal is to be able to use my language/law skills within the ACLU.

I have a fascination/obsession with Russian culture, but I don’t think I will pursue the language because it’s not as useful. I would really love to learn Mandarin and hope to find a tutor/make friends who are willing to help me. I figure Berkeley/SF is teeming with native speakers, making it a great place to learn. A tonal language will be a huge challenge and I want to make the most useful choice…any input on what I could pursue?

Edit: Oh, I applied to UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCSC…I’ve been accepted to UCSC, my third choice.

Yay  FINALLY a linguistics/foreign language major thread has been created.
I’m majoring in Spanish/Linguistics depending on which school I get in [and I speak Chinese as well]. Ultimately (prob. like many people), I want to settle with translation/interpretation. I find interpretation & translation VERY fascinating…

So far, I’ve gotten into UCSB, UCI & UCSD (ERC)
waiting on Cal & UCLA like everyone on this planet… =/

i personally think there are actually more Cantonese speakers in SF, or basically the whole NorCal…cities down south like San Jose or SoCal would be the place you can find more Mandarin speakers, i think…correct me if im wrong :P

@manderzzzz
I actually am kinda frustrated thinking of what I can do with linguistics, i mean, majoring in linguistics give you an edge cuz you indirectly learn more langauges…
on the other hand, some ppl think linguistics majors are not good at anything much, except that they know more languages than ppl usually do LOL
