Hey everyone. I'm wanting to major in Linguistics at either UCLA, UCSB, UCSC, UCSD, or Cal and it is likely that I won't have my 2 full years of a language completed by time of transfer. I will likely have 3 semesters of one and 2 semesters of another. Does anyone have any insight on how much this might jeopardize me getting in? I'm sure it would be more of an issue with UCLA, UCSD, and Cal which are more competitive.

Also, I want to study abroad. Does anyone have knowledge about how studying abroad has worked out for transfers, particularly Linguistics majors?

I was under the impression that you either need two years of language at the high school level, or "proficiency equivalent" to that...not necessarily two full years at the college level? Are you talking about fulfilling IGETC or prereqs for your major?

I don't have much advice to offer, and am curious myself about studying abroad...but I will say that it is nice to see someone majoring in linguistics! I'm majoring in Spanish, and I haven't seen ANY language or linguistics majors around here...

At least we're kiiinda-sorta in the same field-ish? Haha. :]

I am a Linguistics major myself! It is nice to see someone else here with the same passion.

You shouldn't be concerned about the amount of foreign language courses you have taken because you are more than qualified. You only need two semesters of foreign language. This is equivalent to two years of a high school foreign language course. Though, it is always better to take as many semesters of a language since we are majoring in Linguistics.

I, too, want to study abroad. The EAP (Education Abroad Program) is exclusively for the UC system. You can even apply right now if you're interested for the spring or following fall semester. My counselor transferred to Berkeley and also studied abroad as a Political Science major. She has only told me great things about studying abroad.

So, which country are you interested in? Are you emphasizing anything within Linguistics? French? Spanish? Computer Science? Sorry I'm very curious. I just become really excited when I "meet" other people majoring in Linguistics. And this doesn't happen too often.

Hmmm, according to assist.org you need 4 semesters of one language and 2 semesters of another. I always assumed these were college level semesters.

The countries I'm considering right now are Sweden, Germany and Russia. I'll likely do it through EAP, though I suppose I'll look into other education abroad programs as well. I'm not sure on my emphasis. I might do an emphasis in German or Russian, or I may do either Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, or Linguistics and Philosophy. The international studies major at UCSD looks interesting also. I still need to research it to find out which facet interests me the most. How about yourself?
