My D is going to ask for a private room as a freshman due to migraines she has....which can be triggered by certain things. I am wondering if any other incoming freshmen are also seeking such accomodations. THey may have suites of singles but it would be especially nice to have multiple single freshmen so they can be company for each other.

Omgosh Atlmom - our d's could be the same person. Mine also has severe migraines (triggers are lights, extreme fatigue, certain foods). My husband and his mother have the same severe condition. My mother-in-law often ends up in the ER because of it.

And last semester, my d had a roommate who didn't care, and who would insist on keeping the fluorescent overhead lights on until the wee hours of the morning. My d would be buried under pillows fighting nausea from a migraine. So I understand the need for a single. That being said, mine will likely end up in a double next year anyway because she has recontracted her room and her dorm only 'officially' offers singles to RAs. There always seems to be some students living single in a double despite the 'doubles only' status of her dorm though. I wondered if these kids had medical condiditions or if my d should contact housing and let them know about her situation. So far she has not, but it is an official medical thing...tests, treatment, headache diaries, etc... I'm very torn about her living in a double again. I know her dorm is extremely nice and highly desirable...but she could run into the same problem again.

Has housing indicated to you they would cluster freshman (or even sophomores) who opted for singles? It does seem like it would be a good idea. But even if they don't, if you are worried about socialization, please be reassured. The RAs encourage the freshmen to leave their doors open as much as possible for interaction with their floormates. They are trained to make sure freshmen don't feel lonely and are making good connections with others.

While some do not care for the private dorm, Granville Towers, I believe that it does offer single rooms if you are not able to work something out with the university.

OMG! My d suffers from severe migraines, as do I and my mother... We never gave one thought to trying for a single bc of that. My d is just looking for a considerate roommate, as she will be... She hopes that'll also be the case when she has the flu or needs to get up for an early class... I think it'll be a great excercise is communication and consideration for others...
Now you've got me thinking she should room with another migraine-sufferer... how would that look on her "find a roommate" description? LOL
