Hey! I was wondering if freshman are given single dorms at Duke. Like, if I wanted a single as a freshman, could I get one? Can you choose whether or not you have a single, double, or triple??

yes. yes. yes.

yeah, getting a single room as a freshman is actually very probable if you request it. I know of people that didn't request singles but got them anyway, so they're in good supply as a freshman. But doing stuff like FOCUS, needing to be in a dorm with AC, or requesting to be in substance-free would affect those odds since they all restrict the dorm(s) that you can be in.
Enjoy it though, because getting a single as a sophomore is almost impossible.

ay_caramba...crap. Is it really impossible? Even if I don't even care about living in Edens? I um, really need to, um, not have a roommate.

All depends on your lottery number

Nooooooo! I don't want a roommate next year because I tend to clash with others about my "early to bed, early to rise" philosophy. I was fairly confident I would be able to get a single next year. :(

And why does it seem like everyone lives in Edens?

I tend to clash with others in general. This morning I woke up to a hairdryer. Lost 2 hours of sleep. ****ed off.

It does all depend on your lottery number, but since linking is gone starting this year (I think?), I believe it may be even harder to get a single as a sophomore. All I know for sure is that last year, they told us sophomores don't get singles very often; the best chance you had was if you were linking to Edens (and linking to Edens was only possible as a person in certain dorms, it's not the same as just choosing to live there).

On the other hand, the end of linking may help sophomores get singles, especially as juniors/seniors move from Edens to the main quad and leave behind Edens. I'm not sure anyone knows how it will work out exactly quite yet.

Moral of the story: don't plan on getting a single as a sophomore, there's a good chance you'll be disappointed.

Yeah-- I only know two sophomores with singles. One of them says she got it because of connections, and the other moved into an empty single in the middle of the semester. Sophomores usually don't get them-- juniors and the on-campus seniors seem to snatch them up. Duke surprisingly doesn't have a huge number of West Campus singles.

The problem with singles is that you can't join a block with a single. This sort of sucks because blocking sort of ensures living near your best friends (my block got split up on two sides of our quad, which actually now seems like the best thing that ever happened to us). Best case scenario: your lottery number is near some friends and your single is near their rooms. But that honestly seems like a best case scenario for juniors rather than for sophomores.
