To those who have applied to colleges already:

Were any of you surprised by some of your rejections to a certain college that you expected to get into? If so, which ones and elaborate why you were surprised. Also, why did you think you were rejected?

I assume that the OP is asking this of the students who are still around and applied in previous years. I don't consider it whining to tell about a surprise rejection and what you speculate to be the reasons for it. In fact, I would find it to be an interesting thread.

I was fairly surprised that I got rejected from George Washington University last year when I got into Yale. It kind of didn't make sense at first, but I think GWU puts more emphasis on demonstrated interest, at least I read somewhere that they do, and it was a last minute addition to my list that I never paid attention to. Also, I made the mistake of writing all the other colleges I was applying to on the "what other colleges are you considering?" line of the common app. Don't do that! They probably saw Yale and Harvard, assumed they were backup, and decided not to waste an acceptance on someone who didn't really want to go to their school.

MMEI lots of points of view on this. I guess I tend to think ED folks are confident and think it gives them adavantage so when they get rolled or declined it is ouchy time. RD is another round of ouchy. I tend to think of shocking as in they were sure they could do it and whammo.......thin letter. You have good points and on CC comments will abound.

Damnit! I actually want to get into GWU, even though it's a backup for me, too. I haven't gone for an official info session or campus tour, but my sister's been going there for the past three years and I've visited her at least 30 times - I've literally memorized how to drive right from my house to the campus and all. Hm I hope that doesn't count against me.

From my graduating class the biggest shock was a girl who got into Columbia but waitlisted at Lehigh [though this is not really surprising from an objective perspective because they were probably protecting their yield]
