Anyone take Chem 101 lately?

Hi,

We're confused by the Chem 101 "package" listed by the MSC bookstore. There's a package with the book, the access code and a "CPS Response Pad-Pulse".

They offer the book electronically, but if you buy the physical book is it supposed to include a CD? The ones listed on Amazon don't mention any CD, but someone told my son that there was one. I thought maybe the CD is related to the eBook instead. Also, any idea if you can buy Volume1 + Volume2 separately and if that is equivalent to the one big book?

Thanks!

Don’t buy the book. If your son is taking Williamson (most popular CHEM 101 prof), he’ll have to buy OWL, which includes the ebook. This will therefore make your physical copy useless. Also, I don’t think buying the physical book gets you a CD. Williamson requires a CPS clicker pad and an access code for the clicker for her class to do participation points/quizzes.

Thanks - he does have her. What is “OWL”? So I guess we’re stuck buying the package from the MSC on that one. At least the ebook is $100 less than the ‘real’ book.

OWL is “Online Web Learning”, which is the online homework that the Chemistry department uses. It’s like $55 or something and comes with the ebook. You buy it from [Brooks/Cole Chemistry Textbooks](http://owl.chem.tamu.edu/). You’ll need to buy the clicker from MSC; they sold out pretty fast everywhere so make sure you get one.

Williamson was a good prof for 101 but not for 102. Almost easy A’s if you do the OWL homework and study a bit.

How 'bout Stone for 101?

Haven’t been in any of Stone’s classes, but I think he’s alright from what I’ve heard. Rabe & Williamson are the best. Though almost all the intro chem profs are good. Just gotta do your OWL and study a bit and you’ll be great.
