AP Art History for 8th grader

Would this be too much? The course would be taken on FLVS if that helps…

Also would the course credit count for college?

Probably no to the college credit question. Usually colleges only allow credit/placement for math and foreign language credits taken before 9th grade, and usually those are used as part of the ‘4 years of required math’ or 4 years of a foreign language.

My daughter took Art History as a senior. She’d had AP Euro, Latin, and a ton of religion classes. She found it hard but really liked it. Why would an 8th grader need to take it, and is it even allowed?

D had a friend who took AP Art History to meet the school fine arts requirement because he didn’t want to do music or drawing. His mom told me that it was a ton of work and a big mistake.

I thought that you had to be in 9th grade to take an AP exam…

Nope. I took 2 in 8th grade.

My standard answer for AP Art History, based on my expereince as a 12th grader, is if you are into art and architecture, and have reasonably good memorization skills, it’s a piece of cake. If you don’t like art and/or bad at memorization, it will be a loooooong year. That said, I’m not sure the reason for taking in 8th grade.

Course credit ultimately depends upon the college she ultimately attends. Public colleges generally give credit for every subject with an acceptable score. Privates are more selective. For those private colleges that give credit for AP, art history falls about somewhere in the middle. Not as universal as calc, but more than AP Research. I did not take a survey, but I’m not aware of a college that will refuse credit simply because the course was taken in 8th grade, although there may be a few.

But, why?

I can’t imagine truly learning from AP art history, with only a middle school background in history. Context matters, if you want to be educated.

If you just want an AP and a score, well, dont hold your breath adcoms at a top private will swoon.

D19 took it in May, and she loves art and art history. Of the 9 AP classes she took in HS, this was at the top in terms of memorization and work. It was not an easy class. Didn’t help that it was her teacher’s first year teaching that class, and the format of the test had recently changed. Thankfully she did very well on the test though.

Thanks for everyone that has answered. As for the reason, I like to challenge myself and I thought that would be interesting. Not sure if that made a lot of sense. Also, I am homeschooled for now but I am applying for an insanely competitive high school which I would really like to get into. I thought taking this course might help. If I were to take AP art history I would reallyyy like to make sure that it will count for college as well. If anyone can confirm this that would be amazing. TY!

There is no answer of whether it will count for college. Some schools give credit for AP courses while others don’t. Some require a 4 or 5 on the AP test. Some colleges will allow up to 12 AP credits while others allow 40.

If the only reason you are taking it is for college credit, don’t do it.

Depends what college you go to.

Unless one is 100% certain that they will attend a safety, or will be an auotadmit based on GPA (which nobody can take as a given before maybe 11th grade), course selection should never be done with college credit as the primary goal. AP courses add to rigor, which is helpful in admissions even if credit is not given.

Again, not a reason to take the course. It will likely not be a determining factor, particularly if the stats are not there.

You might want to try AP Human Geography instead - it’s designed for 9th/10th graders, as a gateway to the harder APs. It’d still be very challenging for an 8th grader but at least you’d have a shot and learn something. Take AP Art History without AP World nor AP Euro, in fact without HS history, would be a waste of time.
The higher ranked the college, the less likely you are to be getting credit, because at highly selective college students who took APs/IB classes are the default setting.

  • Taking (AP Art History)...

My daughter took it her Junior year, after APEC sophomore year. She loved it, but she had to make a ton of picture flash cards and there was a lot of memorizing. I wouldn’t advise you to do it in 8th grade.
