AP Art History Post Test Discussion

I know… How stupid!?! But they didn’t even Mention the word “medium” they said materials used… BUT STILL!!!

I didn’t even mention the word concrete! So would my score be a 2 out of 9?

i interpreted domestic as anything indoors. hopefully that flies.

^ Yup. You’re right about that one :)

See, I froze when it said materials because I couldn’t think of anything. Now that I actually am not forced to think: steel or concrete. The Ecstasy of St. Teressa would have been amazing too! hops up and down Why couldn’t I think of those then?! D:

Okay, so for the second essay asking about domestic space, could I have interpreted it as actual domestic architecture and explained its meaning from there? I think its still considered a work depicting domestic space. It reminded me of sacred space, so that’s why I went in that direction.

I used The Great Sphinx and The Great Stupa at Sanchi. On the second, I compared and contrasted Venus of Urbino and Olympia

For the Materials/Media essay, I chose The Stele of Hammurabi (Basalt) and Polykleitos’ Doryphoros (my choices are so ridiculous, I don’t even know what I was thinking). For the Domestic Spaces essay, I chose Vermeer’s The Milkmaid and the Breakfast Scene from Marriage a la Mode by William Hogarth. I think i’m getting a 3…

I’m very mad that Arnolfini Wedding (one of my favorite artworks!), didn’t even come to me as a domestic work. I panicked and wrote about the Etruscan sarcophagus of a reclining couple (I know, its a stretch, but I had to write something).
For the first essay, I used Khafre from Egypt and how important diorite was, and compared with “Canyon” by Rauschenberg because of the bald eagle. Pretty much screwed up the two long essays.

seeing that these essays basically screwed everyone over and have a trillion different interpretations, I think they will be more forgiving. For my first long essay, I chose Masjid-I Jami and the Merode Altarpiece. In the second one, I chose Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye and the January page from the Book of Hours (tried to mix one “domestic” scene and an actual home just in case).

Whew yaybrown, I used the Villa Savoye as well :)

tylrrvera: what did you say in the first? The second ones were perfect!
KobeBryantTheJR: Venus of Urbino, maybe. Olympia…no.
Wildcatfan1995: Not bad, actually

Yeah for the second long question I blanked, and ended up writing about 2 pages on Jackson Pollock’s No. 1. I went on about how the splats are really deconstructed furniture, and the repetition represents the daily lives of housewives. The limited color scheme shows the monotony of their lives, and he’s really a closet feminist.

@Lamperouge: In my first essay, I talked about how the basalt reflects the timelessness of the stele of hammurabi and babylonian society as well as how marble reflects the Ancient Greek desire to achieve harmony and perfection and their desire to understand the natural world. Basically, a load of art history BS which probably is wrong.

Tylrrvera, I’m so glad someone used Marriage a la Mode. I thought of it during the essay but couldn’t place the movement it was associated with.

…you could say the timelessness for diorite, dunno about basalt…um…and if it’s marble, it’s a roman copy (usually). The Greeks did bronze…

I’m really scared about my 30 min essays…You guys seem like know the topic pretty well with no misinterpretations… I guess collegeboard is not going to change their rubric.

For the first long essay (materials) I used the Seated Statue of Khafre (talked about the durability of diorite representing the permanence of the pharaoh’s power) and Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty (talked about how the natural materials used reflected the impact of the environmental movement around the 60’s).

For the second essay I used Van Eyck’s Arnolfini Marriage and Richard Hamilton’s Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing?. Except… I completely screwed up the name of the second piece. Does that even matter? Anyways, I talked about how the space showed brands/objects that were instantly recognizable and synonymous with modern American homes.

My friend did the Hamilton one too! and she did some cave/tomb thingie…tomb of the leopards maybe…anyway, she talked about how those domestic scenes lack the human element.

Did anyone write about the Pantheon or Travelers among mts for the First essay?
