Anyone scared for the Art History test?
Any ideas about the long or short essays?

I guess a little bit…Just memorize about 50 pieces you are comfortable about talking about and you’ll do fine :)

Ya I just wish there was some practice tests out there besides my prep book, because I took those already, do you know of any?

I don’t think I’m scared, I’m just trying to memorize and know which time periods had which influences and why they existed. But, it’s all about what you know, so I guess it’s okay.

Don’t worry too much, I took Art History last year with
-a terrible teacher
-a lazy, bad class

So I crammed the last night and managed to get a 4!
Not bad. My advice is get Barrons. It has LOTS of works, more than you’ll need to know but the basics are covered. On the AP test itself, they will always throw in obscure works. Don’t panic, just try and get some details from it like, is it overly decorated-Rococo or is it more Baroque vs. Gothic, etc…

Also, try and memorize at least 10 non-European pieces for the essay. I ended up using Angkor Wat? I can’t remember how you spell it, in comparison to some chapel since last year’s big comparison essay was on religious buildings and their purpose? Crap. Haha.
For the short essays, DARN IT. I messed up two for sure. One was a big spiral thing, I forgot. The other was by Angelica Kauffman, something like Cornelius covering her children? Haha, the question was what time period is it from and I knew every last detail about it EXCEPT the time period. (Neoclassical, not Romantic :[)
Anyways, besides that, I destroyed the MC. No worries, I’m sure you’ll do fine!

I have no worries about Art History. I can spit B.S. like you wouldn’t believe.
Doesn’t hurt that this is the only class in which I’ve paid attention to the teacher all year, either.

Ten?! I was going to go with one non-Western religious structure (Phoenix Hall in Uji sounded nice here) and propaganda piece (I’d probably go with Burning of the Sanjo Palace) that could be forcefully adapted to a variety of themes.

Was it a model for a building? I’m thinking it was either Tatlin’s *Monument to the Third International/I or *Spiral Jetty/I. There’s this other piece, a big neon spiral with words in it, but I can’t seem to remember the title right now. :(

It was spiral jetty. You have the artist correct, but I don’t know the year.

I don’t remember the other essays, but if it’s Kauffman is the Grachii. Like, the Mother of the Grachii presenting her children as her jewels, or something like that. So, it’d be Cornelia.

I was so upset about the first big essay last year, since I think I was weakest on architecture. I know I wrote about some Islamic structure, and probably a cathedral? But I had an amazing teacher, studied very little the night before, got a 5.

That was the worst day though, with English language too. And Art History couldn’t be taken in school because we didn’'t have the right kind of projector. So I was writing like 12 essays, at some university, these parts of which were foreign to me. And it rained!

Anyone know if Egyptian art counts as non-western?

My teacher told me to avoid using Egyptian art for non-western… So I wouldn’t count it as art beyond the European tradition, just in case.

Egyptian usually counts as non-Western. I used it quite a few times. I mean, don’t do Faiyum portraits or anything really Classical, but it’s cool for non-Western.

You probably also know your Near Eastern early stuff well. Use that if you wish to avoid Egypt.

Yeah guys, don’t worry too much about it.
I had to learn all of everything after Baroque last year because we didnt get time to learn any of it in class and still pulled off a 5.
I agree with christy is Barron’s is the APAH bible…if you know this, you should be fine
Good luck!

I’ve been informed by my teacher that it no longer counts as being beyond the Western tradition. I’d suggest that you pick art from elsewhere.

 There’s a projector involved?!

This is news to me.

CB changed the format for 2010 so instead of slide based questions the images are actually printed in the booklet! I hope that will make the writing a bit easier…

Right now I’m just trying to memorize everything after Post-Impressionism (pretty much chapters 33 and 34 in Gardner’s.)

How is everyone else doing with the cramming? =

You masochist. I’m just casually re-reading my notes and cutting class.

I got a 5 on my teacher’s mock test. And he’s known for high pass rates, so I guess I’m on the right track.

What I am doing right now is trying to form connections by comparing/contrasting:
Egyptian with Islamic, Greeks with Romans, Baroque and Romanesque, Rococo and Neoclassicism, Modernism and Postmodernism, Impressionism and Post-impressionism, etc. By forming connections, you will be able to remember artworks more clearly.

My teacher also gave me a list of the top 200 artworks–70% of them appeared on the actual exam!

For me, 20th century art and the Gothic period are difficult to remember so I’m spending extra time on them.

And lastly, my teacher said the exact same thing: form a list of 10 non-European examples beforehand. It will help tremendously during the actual exam, and you won’t have to be searching for one and wasting time. Egyptian artworks can no longer be used for the non-western essay. Too many students have been using the pyramids as examples, but I can’t blame them.

Gothic is definitely hard for me. And I’m having trouble with Neoclassical artwork, no idea why. But I beast at the Multiple choice. Hopefully I’ll do well. Hoping the essays work in my favor. I’m alright at BSing, but I tend to forget the names of artists, which is kind of crucial haha

It’s kind of stupid to not allow Egyptian art on it considering that it is non Western but I guess I’ll try and memorize some Asian and Islamic stuff

Anyone know any good review websites?
