So im deciding on my first art class for my Senior year. Im choosing between AP Art History and Intermediate Painting. I really want to take a break since its my senior year (keep in mind that Im not crazy like everyone here haha). How hard is art history? I have absolutely no experience in art. and how much homework should I expect? (Also, I will be taking other AP and IB exams)

Which should I choose? advice?

AP Art History was hard imo. A LOT of memorization. If you’re in IB bio, it’s even more memorization than that!!

Hey

I really recommend taking Art History, it’s a really great and rewarding course that stays with you… you learn about everything from medium to style, every artist and period from prehistoric art to modern.

The coursework is quite a bit but if you have good time management then it’s not bad at all.
Umm basically you should like the class and the subject because if you don’t then the course will just be torture for you… but trust me you develop a love for it, in a way

That’s about it… for our class all we had was the textbook (Gardner’s) and a study guide (also from Gardner’s) that we had to complete prior to tests. Do all the work and you’re fine

It’s much more rewarding to take art hist rather than normal art because honestly what will art give you unless you have a talent for art.

I agree with everything the last poster said. Art History is quite fine. I think it would actually be an excellent pairing with the standard history classes, like Euro. Memorization is very manageable. In the beginning, it may be tough to remember lots of slides, artists, centuries, countries, and facts on each one. But you will get better at it. You’ll find yourself better able to study as the year goes on.

The exam is actually not bad at all if you put some work into it during the school year. Don’t let the size of the textbook or comments from people who tried to self-study it in one weekend deter you.

I would speak to students at your school who have already taken it.
IMO I found the class and the test to be very hard, mainly because the curriculum is so broad and some of the questions are really specific memorization. (Like date down to the year or knowing the name, artist, and year of a work on sight) I expected the class to be more focused on placing art in its historical/political context than just focused on art itself. and my expectations were wrong.
