AP Art History

hello!
I am in AP Art History this year and, well, I'm less than impressed with the teacher. This is the first year that it is offered at my school and therefore, my teacher isn't very experienced in teaching it. We are about 6 weeks into the school year and are still on Egyptian art. I think the problem is the fact that she is used to teaching art students and not AP history students and doesn't expect us to pick up on material as quickly as is expected with AP classes. I took this class because I have a genuine interest in art and the history of art, but I find myself bored in the class because we move so slowly. But, my main reason for this post is that I was wondering if I should take the AP exam for this class. I know it is a little early to decide for sure, but I really don't see us covering all of the material we have to cover.

It's probably a little too early to tell. You should know, Egyptian art hardly makes up the majority of the test. However, it is important to know art outside of the European tradition.

I think by last December, my class had just finished Romanesque Art. We were on Greek art about this time last year. I hope that gives you some sort of idea. My class barely finished the book "Gardner's Art through the Ages" or something like that.

Your class isn't going that slow. My teacher's been teaching the class for about eight years now, and we'ver just finished Egyptian art (4th week of school), and we're starting on Aegean and Greek art. Egyptian art is good to study because as of this year - the test is going to start focusing on contextual art and include more non-western art (there's a compare/contrast essay on Western vs. Non-western art)...

And on deciding whether to take the test - just wait and see in the spring and decide whether you've covered enough.

Last year at the beginning of October our class was just starting Roman art....comparing Parthenon to Pantheon etc. So yeah I would say you're a bit behind...how about bringing it up with the teacher?

I'm not sure whether we are going slow or not..but right now we are on architecture..

In my art history class we have just begun on Greek art. Don't worry, if you feel that you aren't progressing as fast as you should, request a year long syllabus from the teacher and learn at a pace that you feel comfortable with and by doing that you will not only make yourself mor proficient in the class but you are also preparing yourself in the class. Art History is an awesome class and you should take the exam since you are interested in it.

We're into Greek art now, just finished with the Classical art period. Art history is a great class. No worries, just do some ahead reading, and see how it goes from there. Come winter, if you're still drastically behind, maybe you should bring it up with your teacher.

Thanks so much for all the input. Yeah, I have been considering saying something to my teacher and I would start reading ahead, but she forgot to put the order in for our books in time, so we won't get them in until later this month or next month. Right now, she just copies out of her copy of the book (we are also using Gardner's Art through the Ages). She's a really nice teacher, but she has told us that she has memory lapses (?) and so sometimes things get a little redundant.
Thanks again!

Don't worry. We're also six weeks in the school year, and we also still on egyptian art. If anything I thought we were moving fast, but this is my first AP class. But this teacher is suppose to be good because most people in his class passes the AP exam. Also using Gardner's Art thru the Ages.

We started on September 6, so I guess it has been about three weeks since school started, and we are just finishing Egyptian Art. You are a bit behind but not too badly.

we have our test on the ancient near east tuesday. my teacher has been teaching it since the AP art history test was first offered. :D

4th week just finished with Greek art, archaic, and classical early and late , i actually like it, i wasnt' too much of a fan of ancient near eastern, and egyptian.
