AP Art Studio for 2010

not really relevant explanation/justification

Hi. I'm currently a sophomore. Just finished AP Chem & AP Micro exams. ): Not fun. Hopefully 5's, perhaps 4's. Hopefully, hopefully, hopefully no 3's.

Anyhow. In order to get National AP Scholar before senior year, I need to take 8 AP exams before junior year (and score relatively well). I'm taking 5 AP courses next year. To get to the 8 mark, I'll have to take an AP exam for a course that I'm not taking. (Of course, National AP Scholar is not necessary, but it would be a plus.)

So. The possibility of taking the AP Art Studio exam came up. My school doesn't offer the course, but I'm quite the prolific artsy-fartsy type (mainly portraits & pencil/charcoals, but working my way into other mediums like watercolors & whatnot). I've never had lessons or anything, but I think I'm pretty decent. Constructive criticism would be nice.

Somewhat recent watercolor/marker piece (It looks better in person, I promise!): http://th07.deviantart.com/fs42/300W/i/2009/057/3/6/Perhaps_by_meokat9.jpg
Charcoal/pencil drawing from freshman year (haven't uploaded any recent drawings): http://fc01.deviantart.com/fs25/f/2008/109/6/6/FANARTZ____Kinda__by_meokat9.jpg

Does anyone who's submitted a portfolio before/who's taken art lessons have any advice? What should I focus on? Should I try expanding my ability to work in different mediums? If I work on making a portfolio over the summer, do you think I could pull a 4 or 5? Is it worth paying $86 to try?

Thanks.

Are you f’ing serious? How the hell did you draw that picture of the girl??

Yeah. Very serious. Some of the stuff in the example 5 portfolios is pro. And there are specific things that the college board wants. I don’t know what these specific things are, as I don’t have a teacher or anyone who could provide any sort of guidance in this area.

Pencil, reference picture & paper? I don’t think I could actualy submit it in a portfolio, though. I think they want more than a practice drawing & actually want full-blown, symbolic pieces… except for life studies?

Also, the range for AP Art Studio actually goes from 1-6? What? They probably just roll standard dice to determine scores. D:

1-6 for scoring, but your AP exam grade is still 1-5, I believe.
They don’t want pieces simply copied from photographs. Using references is okay IF you use it to develop an idea of yours, not just to make a mere reproduction of it in pencil, ink, etc.
AP Art is time-consuming, so unless you’re a fast worker or have older pieces you can use should you fall short, you may have a hard time balancing it with your other classes, especially with five APs. (I did. =/ Couldn’t do it with five other exams.)
