AP Bio--Kingdoms, etc.?

For anybody who's taken the AP Bio exam before, how much information do you have to know about the different kingdoms/classes/phylums/orders/etc.? In class we went over the major groups and their most definining characteristics, not in depth at all. Then I opened the Cliff's AP Bio book, and they go into A LOT more detail than in class. Does anybody have experience with the Cliffs book and comment on the necessity of all the detail? Or on the exam?

Any and all input it welcomed. Thanks!

For the animal and plant phylums, certain key characteristics are needed. I am not sure about the fungi and protist phylums though.
