I’m a freshman and I chose to take French instead of biology this year so I could get to the AP level by senior year (my school only lets us take one or the other freshman year). I’m planning to take general biology over summer and either chem honors or AP Bio next year…
Which should I take if I want to study either medicine or computers? (I’m undecided :/)
I’m a senior, and I took honors biology as a sophomore, IB (which is basically AP level) physics my senior year, and IB chemistry both junior and senior years. I’ve found chemistry to be an incredibly enriching experience, and I’m actually going to major in it next year because I loved high school chemistry so much.
If you take one next year, could you take the other your junior year? If not, I would recommend chemistry in order to appear more well-rounded (as you’re already taking a biology class regardless).
Take chemistry, I believe chemistry is applicable to a lot of majors so even if you decide not to continue with medicine, your course plan will be better suited to change according to your interests.
The ideal plan would probably be to take both classes next year, but if that’s not possible, I’d recommend the following plan:
10th - H Chem
11th - AP Chem
12th - AP Bio or AP Physics 1
I am a senior; I took Honors Biology as a freshman, and I take AP Biology now. I took Honors Chemistry as a sophomore, and I’m taking another chemistry class this year as well. What you should take next year honestly depends on your interests. I find Chemistry to be easier for me, but AP Biology covers topics that I find to be more interesting. I would suggest taking Chemistry. You’ll already take Bio over the summer, so it’ll be beneficial to take Chemistry. Chemistry involves a combination of science and math (to some extent, in my opinion), so it is more applicable to careers, majors, etc.
You’ll want to take Chem H and ideally also AP Chem for both medicine and CS. Pre-meds should also take AP Bio and CS majors want to take AP Physics.
I am taking AP Chemistry at the moment at it is quite an intriguing course. This course many students in college struggle with and taking this class will help you prepare. If you want to go into the engineering or medical fields for work then this is an extremely helpful class and highly recommended. Either way AP Chemistry is great to take in general since you will learn so much while taking it.
You should do H Chem, you are only a freshman so you got plenty of time to take AP Bio. A lot of people take Chem honors in sophomore so I would recommend that. Also, it won’t stop you if you want to do AP Chem in either junior or senior year.
Do you have a community college near you? If so, then take college bio there and H chem in school or vice versa
If you are taking biology over this summer, I would recommend honors chemistry. While not necessary for AP biology, I was told that AP biology does use some chemistry concepts.
