I'm about to be a Junior in the fall..I've already signed up for AP Bio but the thing is, I had to take regents/regular level Biology in grade 9 because the honors classes were completely filled up. Not to mention my teacher didn't really teach anything..to the point where I sent her emails detailing my uncertainties, only to receive responses something along the lines of "look in your textbook you slacker". I don't feel like I learned much in my 9th grade bio class (in fact i only remember hating it)..but I still really wanted to take AP Bio. Am I doomed?? Will I automatically fall behind the majority of the class? Is Honors Bio a huge pre-requisite? Is there a study method I can follow that will help me do well in the class? What is a good supplementary prep guide that I can buy?

AP Biology was an awesome class! I took it my sophomore year after taking Biology Honors. There is a lot of information, that cannot be denied, but as long as you focus on main points and connect those main points and be able to apply them. If you need a supplementary book, I would say to go with Cliffs. I used it myself and it is a very good guide. (By the way, some people take AP Bio without any biology at all… but that is rare)

AP bio is easily self study-able if your memory is good. Get CliffsAP Biology and you’re set =)

I selfed Bio while taking a regents/regular level bio class and was fine… just a lot of reading from Cliffs :)

thanks everyone! I guess the fact that school is just around the corner is making me nervous xD

I’ve been reading prep books and it seems so confusing to me…I don’t think I can memorize so much information, and the labs are probably going to kill me, I’m so screwed

I took AP Biology during senior year, and since I hadn’t taken a biology class since freshman year I started off remembering almost nothing. I found the real test easy, and got a 5.

It’s not memorizing the material. it’s understanding it.

I haven’t taken any Bio class before but I’m taking AP Bio this year…

If you didn’t really like bio that much, then I wouldn’t take ap bio if I were you… You don’t want to force yourself to take a class you’ll end up hating.

It’s not so bad, and I self-studied WHILE taking AP Bio. Then again, I LOVED Bio. I actually do think that understanding is REALLY important, but memorization can bring you through the test if you work at it, especially with classification.

I have to admit, I obsessively made flashcards and I didn’t even fully read CliffsNotes (best purchase possible for AP Bio).

I managed a 5 without too great of a difficulty taking it first time.
