Hi, I am currently a freshman about to choose my classes for sophomore year. I don't know if i should take AP biology or regular chemistry (my school doesn't offer honors chemistry and you can only take AP chemistry as a junior or senior)

So far i plan on taking Honors English 2, Honors Pre Calculus, and AP european history for sophomore year. I just need to decide between AP bio and regular chem.

Schools usually like to see that you have at least one year each of Bio, Chem and Physics and then a fourth in any of them. If you take AP Bio you’d have to take AP Chem (which is quite hard and you’d probably benefit from some Chem background first) and then a Physics course. So it all depends on what you plan to take in later years

I would say that you should take chemistry because even if you don’t take it next year, you’ll have to take it junior year because it’s a requirement for graduation (at least, for my school and most other schools). Once you’ve taken it, you can decide whether you like chemistry or biology better and take the AP class you think you’d excel in, or maybe you’ll love both and end up taking both AP classes :).

If you can, take both. But if you have to choose, pick regular chemistry because it’s important no matter what. Then you’d have two more years to take AP Bio, AP chem, or/and AP whatever. Don’t rush on AP’s if you haven’t taken the basic core sciences. And don’t worry about being older than your classmates if that’s what bothering you. At my school, there are only two sophomores I know of in my AP Bio class. The rest are either seniors or juniors (like me :D).
